Gross examination, preparation and cutting of blocks, preparation and staining of slides.

Maintenance of post examination tissues, blocks, and slides.

Performs all safety, maintenance and quality control activities appropriate for the technical area.

Assists the pathologist in gross examination.

Logs specimens accurately with patient data, specimen types and sources.

Assigns surgical number.

Embeds tissue specimens in paraffin blocks.

Cuts quality sections using a microtome.

Prepares, stains, and cover slips microscopic slides for examination by the pathologist.

Assists with bone marrow biopsy, fine needle aspirations, and renal biopsies.

Performs special stains on tissue specimens as directed by the pathologist.

Demonstrates a good knowledge of the methods and techniques used in preparing surgical, cytological and autopsy material and of basic laboratory techniques and equipment.

Uses all histology equipment according to standard technique and manufacturer's specifications.

Accurately prepares solutions and reagents according to standard formulas and/or written method procedures.

Labels solutions according to agency standards with initials, date, and content of solution.

Helps with pathology related paperwork.

Performs quality control procedures consistent with acceptable practice and CAP or JCAHO requirements.

Performs preventive maintenance on all histology equipment as required.

Files and stores slides and paraffin blocks for accurate and easy irretrievability.

Observes expiration dates on solutions and reagents.

Demonstrates a willingness and ability to troubleshoot instrument and procedure problems to resolution, with proper documentation.
