Accomplishments
Mr. Kohnen is a registered licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Ohio. Experienced in equipment design, construction, project management and operations.
Recently, Mr. Kohnen developed a patented process whereby scrap whole tires are recycled both for their fuel and scrap metal value while charging a fee for the tire disposal. The energy value is recovered via combustion in a utility boiler while the scrap metal is sent offsite for recycling. Thus saving the fuel cost for the utility and generating revenues for the user through disposal fees and scrap metal sales.
Early in his career, he had the responsibility of installing and managing Solvent Resource Recovery, Inc.'s reclamation facility in West Carrollton, Ohio (currently owned by Veolia Environmental). This included acquiring all environmental operating and construction permits (including writing and being issued a USEPA Part A and Part B permit), distillation equipment specification, material purchases, plant layout, equipment installation and shakedown.
Mr. Kohnen has successfully worked on alternative fuels projects using Municipal Solid wastes and coal fines throughout the Midwest of the United States. His involvement included the design and layout of the processing of waste materials into fuels through the use of shredders, pelletizers and briquettes.
Mr. Kohnen designed, permitted, built and operated a state-of-the-art regional biomedical waste disposal facility in Dayton, Ohio. Included in the operation of the facility was the development of both the hardware to destroy the medical waste and the implementation of a training program to instruct the employees at the facility the proper handling and emergency response techniques necessary to operate the plant.
For a number of the sites, he was involved in the writing of the operating manuals and the training of the employees. Other projects Mr. Kohnen has led are identified on the below project list.
Concerned about recycling, resource recovery, and proper environmental controls, Mr. Kohnen has used his knowledge of combustion principles and assisted in converting twenty-four cement kilns to using whole scrap tires as a supplemental fuel. Also he has worked with ten cement kilns in augmenting their fuel usage by legally combusting hazardous waste derived fuels, internationally.
Mr. Kohnen has vast experience in the waste disposal field. His blend of environmental awareness and operational knowledge has enabled him to become recognized as a leader in the industry. He has consulted on a number of projects throughout the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, Taiwan, Poland, Thailand, Chile, and Spain has presented technical information to groups in Washington, D.C. and has two patents in the field.
