PROJECT DETAILS

ISM Project :

Using CAN Protocol Control and Monitor the Temperature

Technologies used :

ARM (LPC2129), CAN-BUS, ADC, Hyper terminal.

Project Details :

It consists of 3 ARM based board of LPC2129. Each board configured to transfer the messages with their respective message IDs to each other. By checking the each message ID relevant messages will be get served and remaining are rejected the whole system consist of Hyper terminal, UART, ADC, Keypad, LCD.

Applications:

1. CAN protocol used in automotive industries, medical equipment designs, Robotics, Aviation based Industries.

ISM PROJECT

Using CAN Protocol Control and Monitor the Temperature

INTRODUCTION:

CAN is a “Controlled Area Network”. CAN is a Multi-Master Serial Bus. CAN developed by “Robert Bosch” Company. It is Asynchronous High speed short distance protocol. It is designed to allow micro-controllers and devices to communicate with each other in applications without a host computer. It is message based protocol.

PROCEDURE:

In this project we use the 3 ARM based boards with the LPC2129. These 3 boards connected to each other through the CAN BUS. In 1st ARM board ADC and LCD is connected. 2nd ARM board connected to PC through the UART and also connected KEYPAD. In 3rd ARM board LCD is connected.

WORKING:

1. In the 1st ARM board we use ADC and LCD. When we change the ADC value it displayed on the LCD.

2. In the 2nd ARM board get the ADC value and displayed on PC through UART and Hyper Terminal. In this board KEYPAD also connected. When we type any message it passes to the 3rd ARM board.

3. In the 3rd ARM board get this keypad message and displayed on LCD which is connected itself.

4. Compare to other protocols we can transmit the data without noise. In CAN Bus noise is there but its not affect to data. Because differential voltage. In CAN every data has a identity in CAN terminology we called Identifier.\

5.All boards are configure to transfer the messages with their message IDs. When we change the ADC value it displayed ARM board 1 and PC also. Every message transfer and receive successfully.

6. The identifier length is 11th bit in standard frame format, and 29th bit in extended frame format.

7. For the transmission and reception CAN protocol have two frame formats. DATA frame format and REMOTE frame format. In DATA (Tx) frame we can transmit Standard (11th bit) and Extended (29th bit) identifier

8. Our project we use the 11th bit identifier. In CAN every has message unique ID so device checking the message ID if it matches then only it accept the data if ID not matches then that message and data rejected by device.

9. Can is basically developed for the communicate between vehicle devices and microcontroller. It designed originally for multiplex electrical wiring within automobiles, but is also used in many other contexts.

APPLICATION:

1.CAN bus widely used in Automobile industry. The modern automobile industry having many Electronic Control Units (ECU) for various subsystems. It is very complex but communicate successfully without any error because of only CAN bus.

2.Today the CAN bus is also used as a field bus in general automation environments, primarily due to the low cost of some CAN controllers and processors.

3.The CAN bus protocol has been used on the Shimano Di2 electronic gear shift system for road bikes and is also used by the BionX system in its direct drive motor.
