July 31, 2014- August 8, 2015 PHI Inc. (Flight Medic)

Saudi Arabia/Jeddah Base

As a board certified flight paramedic, I serve as the sole PHI Air Medical clinician aboard a medically configured Bell 412 or Sikorsky S-76C aircraft. Along with managing critically injured or ill patients, I am responsible for training Saudi Arabian clinicians whom are employed by the Saudi Red Crescent Authority. These colleagues’ education ranges from that similar to a US- trained EMT- Basic, to Saudi-train physicians with no out of hospital experience. The challenge of delivering “on the job “education are made more palpable by language barriers and devastating trauma that is seen on a day to day bases in Saudi Arabia. Most responses are to mass causality, mass fatality traffic accidents. Most patients require advanced airway management, many times resulting in the PHI Air Medical flight paramedic performing two rapid sequence inductions and transporting those patients to the nearest trauma center. Most transports times by air do exceed one hour at times. As mandated by the severity of the mechanisms of injury and mass casualty scenes we encounter each aircraft is capable of transporting two ventilator dependent patients, with complete ACLS monitoring for both. These same considerations also mandate an expanded scope of practice. This scope includes: pericardiocentesis, tube thoracostomy, esharotomy, and a variety of surgical airway techniques.
