Ten years warranty burner tube project
a.Do analysis on corroded burner tubes coming from different states and countries which returned from customers, then get the corrosion types, and find the reason for corrosion
b.Based on new blueprint design select materials candidates, then communicate with vendors in America, Japan, China to get the materials suitable for making burner tube
c.Design accelerated corrosion experiment for materials we get, then estimate the life time of the materials
d.Conduct experiments, then base on the results select some materials, then made into burner tube for the life time test
e.Analyze the heating process for burner tube: because of the gas used for grill, carbonizing will happen, which is also a kind of corrosion for the tube
f.Use FEA method to simulate the thermal deformation of the burner tube at high temperature and high pressure
g.Use CFD model in Abaqus to simulate the gas flow in tube at high temperature
h.Considering the test results and the simulating results to recommend materials for burner tubes used on new products
Metallurgical and heat treatment process analysis
a.Use etchant to etch steel, then get microstructure for grain size analysis
b.Roughness test: use the portable roughness tester to test the roughness for materials
c.Create database which related the grain size and roughness corresponding to the salt fog test results
d.From the salt fog results, get the best grain size range for stainless steel (resist corrosion long time in salt fog test, the materials is better)
e.From the grain size range, analyze the heat treatment process, for example: annealing time and temperature
f.For some specific parts, we may need some specific heat treatment process: normalizing, annealing, tempering/quenching, carbonizing/decarbonizing
QA Project
a.Work with QA department to improve the QUA documents based on ASTM, JIS and ASM standards
b.Help QA lab to create new methods to test samples, such as plastic panel, screws, etc.
c.Help lab technicians to do XRF test: point scan, line scan and mapping
d.PPAP: Communicate with vendors to get new samples for testing; review test report and help senior engineer determine to accept or reject the parts
e.Get trained for Minitab
Quickly materials’ ranking and selecting project : Electrochemical Corrosion and Molten salt corrosion test
a.Electrochemical test: Use potentiostat to do electrochemical test for different kinds of stainless steel in corrosive solution in order to get the polarization curve, that could help to tell which type of steel could resist corrosion better, this is also used on other metals and alloys
b.Molten salt corrosion test: this is an efficiency experiment to test materials’ behavior not only at high temperature but also with a corrosive environment.
c.Based on the test results and price, suggest materials used for products
Rooting reason for causing failure on products and scientific analysis
a.Doing failure analysis for the products which are returned by customers, for example: metallographic analysis, tensile test, hardness test, defect analysis, etc
b.Using mechanical background to design new parts which could elongate the life time of the whole products
c.Using solidwork or CAD to draw sketch for new design parts
Illinois Institute of Technology, Research Assistant Chicago, IL 09/2013-12/2014
Research on Ag-In and Ag-In-Mg phase diagram
a.Make Ag-In alloy by different methods, arc-melting and regular anneal
b.Use DSC to get the phase reaction in the alloys
c.Use XRD to test the phases existing in the alloys
d.Use SEM/EDS to get the phase distribution and microstructure in the alloy
Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Intern Shenyang, China 06/2011-08/2012
Polishing kinds of metal samples to help other students do research efficiently
Doing electrochemical test for different kinds of alloys
Do SEM/EDS and XPS for corrosion research
Corrosion property of Ni-Cr plating (Paper published in China)
a.Prepare Ni-Cr regular size and nano-size powders in different proportions
b.Use carbon steel as basic material, plating the basic materials with different power supply: AC current, DC current, and pulse current
c.Use different power to plate different size Ni-Cr powders
d.After plating, use SEM/EDS to test the composition and microstructure of the plating
e.Roughness test and hardness test of the platings
f.Design corrosion experiments to test plating, then decide the best power, best crystal size, and best Ni-Cr proportion for Ni-Cr platings
