PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

LUBRIZOL CORPORATION, Brecksville, OH 1988 to 2015

A $7 billion subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway. The Lubrizol Corporation is a global specialty chemical company serving customers in more than 100 countries. Lubrizol owns and operates manufacturing facilities in 17 countries.

Senior R&D Chemist V, (2013 to 2015)

Provided R&D leadership for new product development including fire retardant polymers, inkjet binders, and floc adhesives. Responsible for equipment recommendations for labs, pilot plants and main facility with project budgets of $100K to $2M.

Completed development and scale-up of new-to-company process for manufacturing ink jet binder and assisted in product launch to market including polymer specification for application, sustainable materials and pilot plant procedures.

Created polymer for surgeon’s gloves identifying non-allergenic materials for improved elasticity and reduced hand fatigue.

Conducted manufacturing troubleshooting for urethane process by verifying raw material samples for inconsistencies and contamination resulting in reduced waste generation and improved customer satisfaction.

Developed process modification for improving heat age stability of significant product utilized in textile coatings, resulting in reduced customer complaints and waste generation.

Generated cost and resource estimates for new projects, and estimated probability of technical success.

Senior R&D Chemist IV, (2006 to 2012)

Managed R&D process and patent approval for new product development. Worked collaboratively with plant management, engineers and operators identifying manufacturing issues, scaling up new products, and implementing new processes.

Aided in the design and equipment specification needed when transferring product line from old manufacturing facility to new one ensuring product consistency and improved manufacturing efficiencies resulting in reduced costs.

Reviewed processes being used for transfer of product line to a new location. Aided plant in first year in producing over 99% final prime material, saving $10M+ in waste, disposal, and time.

Filed patent application for Aqueous ink jet compositions resulting in a granted US patent.

Filed patent application and received US patent approval for polymers for surgeon’s gloves.

Filed patent application for Vinyl Chloride, Acrylic, and Polyurethane dispersion polymers with improved MVTR and static dissipative properties. Patent still pending.

Scaled up new-to-company product and process to a toll manufacturer in Japan, going directly from lab scale to commercial scale without issue.

Advanced R&D Chemist, (2000 to 2005)

Developed new products, conducted manufacturing troubleshooting, and provided technical support to customers.

Updated laboratory standard operating procedures for improved technical knowledge, and lab safety.

Trained technicians, PHD scientists, sales department, marketing, process development, and manufacturing groups on urethane dispersion synthesis, applications, and formulating resulting in improved sales and market share.

Improved link between lab scale, pilot scale, and production scale synthesis addressing scale-up concerns, and minimizing time of development of scale-up process.

Advanced R&D Chemist….continued

Filed patent application for plasticized urethane dispersions and received US patent approval. Developed and scaled up multiple polymers based on this technology, for wood, plastic, and fire retardant coating applications for $6M sales.

Received US patent approval for breathable polyurethanes, blends, and articles achieving $8M sales.

Developed and refined a test for amount determination of a hazardous residual monomer, ensuring its elimination from products.

R&D Chemist, (1993 to 1999)

Provided R&D support for existing and new product development.

Developed and scaled up a waterborne “soft touch” urethane dispersion.

Modified formula and process eliminating grit formation and long-term storage issues, while increasing solids content from 30% to 38%, resulting in increased and long-term sales.

Developed and scaled up highly flexible polymer for PVC topcoats.

Developed and scaled up highly scratch resistant polymer for rigid plastics.

Developed and scaled up specialty release coating for use with pressure sensitive adhesive systems.

Developed urethane polymer for blending with an ACR/PCV copolymer for low VOC, high solids, highly flexible, non-blocking foam coating applications.

Developed and scaled up a class of glove donning coatings.

Filed a patent for “Rubbery Polyurethanes”, patent 6,017,997 granted in 2000.

Developed an improved-weathering (QUV) version of a standard product.

Junior R&D Chemist, (1990 to 1992)

Developed and scaled up a unique solvent-borne process for a specialty cosmetics application.

Continued to aid a rapidly growing business through increasing structure/property knowledge, as well as dispersion formulation knowledge, and synthesis and applications support.

R&D Technician, (1988 to 1989)
