PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

SUMMARY: I have worked in editorial production for over 27 years, first from the publisher (client) side and then from the vendor side. I have both hands-on and managerial experience in producing high-quality college textbooks in a wide range of disciplines. I am also an excellent writer and copyeditor, familiar with MLA style, APA style, Chicago style, CSE style, GPO style, and AMA style. In 2014, I began freelancing full-time and I am seeking new opportunities to use my expertise as an editor and proofreader.

Copyediting: I provide expert copyediting services ranging from substantive editing and rewriting to mechanical editing for typos, grammar, and sense. I am familiar with MLA, APA, Chicago, CSE, GPO, and AMA styles and can easily learn additional styles as needed. I have written and edited content in a wide range of genres from poetry and essays to novels and textbooks.

Proofreading: I offer careful proofreading of manuscripts or pages. Services include proofreading typeset copy against edited manuscript and cold reads.

Project Management: I am an experienced editorial project manager specializing in college textbooks in various disciplines (English, business, education, social sciences).

CENVEO PUBLISHER SERVICES (8/11-4/14) Ft. Washington, Pennsylvania

Cenveo acquired Nesbitt Graphics in 2011. I stayed on in my position as a Sr. Project Manager (see below).

NESBITT GRAPHICS, INC. (10/00–7/11) Ft. Washington, Pennsylvania

Sr. Project Manager and Copyeditor

Coordinated all stages of full-service production for 1-, 2-, and 4-color college textbooks. Primary areas of expertise: English (handbooks, rhetorics, technical writing, and literature anthologies), mass communication, and education. Familiar with MLA, APA, Chicago, CSE, and GPO styles.

Developed teams of in-house and freelance personnel and created project-specific alternative workflows as needed.

Developed and maintained good rapport with authors and clients from various divisions for several publishers (Pearson, Wadsworth/Cengage, Bedford/St. Martin’s).

Created schedules and kept everyone updated on status.

Actively anticipated problems and worked out solutions for editorial, production, schedule, and budget issues.

Worked with in-house production coordinators, design and art departments, typesetting departments (both in-house and offshore), and quality control.

Worked with client-assigned permissions researchers and photo researchers to ensure that all material included in each book was used fairly and legally and credited properly.

Copyedited many of my own projects and some projects for others as assigned. Used whatever style was required, including the house styles of the publishers, and maintained or created editorial style sheets for each book.

Became familiar with several publishers’ proprietary XML tagging guidelines and with keymarking manuscript both in hard copy and electronically.

Attended workshops on Pearson’s PCL Integrated Workflow initiative and Accessibility initiative, as well as development training.

Created and edited documents using Microsoft Word, marked up PDFs using both Comment and Editing tools, and edited existing Excel worksheets (schedules, image logs, permissions logs).

FREELANCE COPYEDITOR (1/89–10/00 and 3/14-5/14)

Freelance copyeditor for numerous publishers and vendors, mostly college textbooks but also some trade and medical. Recently copyedited Summary Statements for The United States Medical Research and Material Command Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs through SRA.

Subjects included business, education, psychology, sociology, education, history, self-help, and English.

Depth of editing ranged from rewriting and reorganizing content to purely mechanical editing (for grammar, typographical errors, and sense).

Keymarked manuscripts for typesetting using the designs and tagging guidelines provided.

Created editorial style sheets for others to use in later stages of the project (clients, proofreaders, indexers, author, development editors) to ensure consistency.

Kept up to date with changes in MLA, APA, and Chicago styles. Also used CSE, AMA, and GPO styles and the in-house style sheets of the various agencies and publishers.
