Education:

B.A. in Sociology from San Diego State University (with a minor in Spanish), 1987.

Background:

I served in the Marine Corps 09/1976 – 05/1981. My initial training and job classification was as a Combat Engineer (Geodetic Surveyor). I spent the final 38 months of my enlistment serving as a Marine Security Guard in Embassies around the world. My primary locations were Beirut (Lebanon) and Mexico City (Mexico). I speak fluent Spanish and have had courses in the military in French and Arabic. I have held top security clearances, as required for my duties. I also was a member of DMAT CA-4 (Disaster Medical Assistance Team) from 1999 – 2012. We served under Federal Mandate to various departments of the Federal Government: United States Public Health, Homeland Security, FEMA and ultimately with Health and Human Services. We are tasked with responding to disasters or terrorist (natural or man-made) as required anywhere in the US, its Territories and / or Possessions when the local emergency infrastructure is overwhelmed or unable to function due to the disaster. My position was as Logistics Chief. Anything to do with the functioning of the Team not directly related to patient care was my responsibility; communications, resupply, security, physical plant items, lodging and transportation were the primary areas, but other duties were occasionally requested and provided as needed. I resigned my position in 2012 as a result of a medical issue that prevented me from deploying as needed.
