HMO patients had to have a PCP, whereas PPO did not. You didn’t have to file a claim for your HMO visit whereas with a PPO visit you sometimes had to pay up front for the care and then file a claim for reimbursement. These and other differences made the data extraction and analysis produce very different results which had to be interpreted carefully by the team as costs could vary depending if you utilized a PPO or HMO provider.
