Managing editor • Port City Daily, Wilmington, North Carolina • August 2012- August 2015

• Successfully launched Port City Daily, an online daily newspaper covering Wilmington, North Carolina, and its surrounding counties in September 2012, guiding it from concept to a leading, trusted news source with 3 million page views in its third year.

• Daily responsibilities included editing all content published on Port City Daily (approximately 15 to 20 stories each day, seven days a week), reporting on and writing news stories with a focus on crime and court reporting, filling in for reporters covering a wide variety of beats to include state and local governments, state and federal court proceedings, spot news and feature profiles, and sending a daily email newsletter with the top headlines of the day every day.

• Managerial aspects of the job included leading a newsroom of six full-time employees, mentoring and training reporters, liaising with different departments, which included a sales team, client services team and a radio news programmer for live radio news segments and recorded, one-minute news updates on the radio.

• Established effective social media campaigns to increase page views and overall readership. Daily responsibilities included tracking page views on Google analytics and steering social media updates to increase readership of stories that had lower readership numbers than expected.

• Radio news responsibilities included scheduling and overseeing all live news updates on two Wilmington radio stations – The Dude (103.7FM and 93.7 FM) and 98.3 The Penguin.

• Other successful initiatives included hosting multiple live election-night broadcasts on Port City Radio (April 2013-February 2015, at which point the parent company ceased all-news operations on the signal), as well as interviewing legal experts, candidates and other guests live, on-air on a regular basis, as well as conducting a weekly news-in-review.

• Reported on U.S. Congress and federal agencies, N.C. General Assembly and state departments, county and local governments, campaign finances, crime, state and federal courts, health care, legal affairs and energy.

• Shot, produced and edited video for newspaper’s website and TV news show. Generated and developed stories, series and special sections and projects. Co-anchored a TV news show and developed and produced TV news show segments.

• Demonstrated leadership in planning, creating and moderating a Congressional debate in 2010 that drew a live and TV audience of thousands of people. Authored questions, served as marketing and promotions lead and moderated the debate.

Awarded the National Newspaper Association Best Feature Series (second place) for a series of feature stories about Brunswick County’s Drug Treatment Court in 2010. Awarded the National Newspaper Association’s Freedom of Information Award (third place) in 2011 for investigative reporting. Other editorial awards include best spot news reporting, best general news reporting and best feature writing from the N.C. Press Association.
