McLaren Center for Ceramic Research Rutgers University, Piscataway, NJ Undergraduate Technician April 2013 – December 2015

● Proficient in operation of XRD, XRF, dilatometer, softening point apparatus, tube furnaces, and box furnaces

● Facilitated in operating glass furnaces along with batching and pouring of glass

● Troubleshoot and repair laboratory and experimental equipment as well as box furnaces by testing and replacing thermal couples, heating elements, fuses, and controllers

● Set up new laboratories removal of old equipment, installation of furniture, computers and lab equipment, as well as repairing

● Fabricated simple sheet metal structures proficient with machine shop basics: band-saw, lathe, milling machine

● Research Project: “Synthesis of Activated Carbon” using old tobacco stems as the precursor, they were pyrolized in a tube furnace under N2 gas, then activated via steam activation and KOH activation. The results of the two activation methods were compared, as well as various dwelling temperatures for pyrolizing and activating

● Assisted Laboratory Manager with research on plasma sintering synthesis of cubic boron nitride helped assemble apparatus as well as underlying theory and technology

● Worked Independently fixing equipment throughout the Engineering Building as well as the Center for Ceramic Research ACTIVITIES

Independent Research at Rutgers University, Piscataway, NJ Sep 2014-Apr 2014 Increasing Recovery Rate of Single & Dual Stream Recycled Glass

● Attempt to achieve pre-consumer quality glass by adding varying amounts of cullet to a control batch (soda-lime-silica glass) to determine maximum amount of cullet that can be used without compromising the resulting glass’s performance

● Formulated spread sheet for glass batches; in order to meet the composition of the resulting glass, a lot of chemistry and stoichiometry was involved in determine how much a raw material would contribute to the batch.

● Batched and poured each sample using post-producer cullet and post-consumer cullet

● Using knowledge of rheology and density a simple decontamination process was used for post-consumer cullet

● Characterized each sample for softening point, density, glass transition temperature, refractive index, and hardness

● Determined best melt dynamics and glass properties were associated with 70% batch and 30% cullet, however a solution to the random colors of resulting glass (only when using post-consumer cullet) could not be determined Tzu-Chi Youth/Collegiate Association of New Jersey, Cedar Grove, NJ Community Service Associate Sep 2007 – Present
