WORKING EXPERIENCE:

1.Lijaha Sisu Restaurant and Bar Manzini 2006-2007

Supervisor, bar manager and catering:

My role was supervising staff members and ensuring that the business is running accordingly. Other duties included: Making sure the quality of customer service was up to standard, updating and recording stock (Food and Beverages). I was more involved in the catering business, sometimes prepared food for some orders. I had to work effectively in a team environment, to adhere to deadlines on delivery of job requirements; to listen and take instructions; with the willingness of continuous learning, as well as proactive and would take initiatives when required.

I worked full time for the family business. Thus, I have been involved in the business part-time since 2000-2009 due to studies. This was the environment that part led me to falling in love with Psychology when working as a bar tender and catering for different kinds of people.

VOLUNTARISM:

1. Big Brother Big Sister South Africa April-November 2008

A mentorship programme:

I voluntarily signed up for the programme, along with some of my colleagues, at Big Brother Big Sister South Africa. I was placed at Sparrows Primary School and was matched with a 13 year old boy known as a ‘little’ who had low self-esteem, had trouble coping with his social and academic life also needed guidance. The meetings with the student were during school hours where I would see him at break hour.

My role as his mentor was to help him cope with his ecosystem, make him feel of any significance to anyone or anything. It would also involve helping my little realize the importance of school, dream and having goals. As a mentor I was more like a friend and a sister, most importantly the feeling of trust was most important. As a social work student I was also playing the role of a counselor.

2.University of Johannesburg March-November 2008-2009

Internship for counseling:

I was placed at the Sparrows’ Combined School. As a pre-requisite for the course, I did voluntary counseling sessions with young adults between 18-21 years. The main roles of a social worker played were as: a counselor, a teacher and a facilitator.

The counseling sessions occurred only during school hours, time slots would depend on the free periods; therefore I followed the school time table. The first semester was about individual counseling sessions and the second semester was based on group counseling sessions as the facilitator. As a social worker, it was based on the generalist social work practice; the social worker does not specialize on a field of practice.

I practiced the different counseling skills of communication. Each session was accompanied by a progress report, giving every detail on the session in question. The sessions were in progress in the presence of a supervisor who was a social worker at the school.

The extra activities: 2008-2009

I was involved in a Community Development Society (CDS), a charitable society. It is a group of university students getting together to do some community services for the needy, mostly dealt with children. We would organize a trip to spend time with children in orphan age homes. We came up with ideas of activities to play with the children while outside the homes’ environment. Sometimes there would be cleaning parks and then entertainment this gives the children hopes.

In other days we would visit homes with orphaned and vulnerable also children living with HIV/AIDS. Play games and give out gifts. Some moments were very overwhelming both for the society members and the children.

Other skills:
