Extiris Grand Rapids, MI 2011 – 2015

Client: YourAreaCode, LLC

Role: Project Management/Business Analyst Consultant for Product and Service Development

The primary objective was to resurrect their client website systems without service interruptions. This was a particular challenge as their environment was in serious disarray and failing under the overwhelming traffic loads. The previous developers were no longer with the company and the system was completely undocumented.

First we set out to stabilize the environment by introducing source code management and automated software releases along with a more formalized bug tracking and ticket workflow system.

Next we created a disaster recovery system and automated the entire backup and restoration processes with cycled 15 minute snapshots.

Implemented source code doc-blocks which allowed for automated and live generation of critical system documentation.

We then formed an internal quality assurance team to help reduce and prevent problems from reaching our production systems.

Finally, we worked to identify and clean up any serious bottlenecks or other security holes in the code.

Once the stabilized, we began reverse engineering and documenting the existing disparate web systems and interviewing stakeholders in order to determine the true business requirements.

Conducted the research, evaluation, and selection of key 3rd party APIs and frameworks to produce complex business components such as social feed automation, credit card processing, reporting, and more.

Created a very detailed multi-year roll-out plan and budget that allowed for the system to be re-built from the ground up while leveraging the existing and new modules as they were built.

Responsible for educating the teams on new technologies and how they can be applied to the system.

Led the entire team from proof-of-concept on through to post-production roll-outs using the new structured and more formalized project management practices.

Also responsible for pulling together and scheduling meetings between stakeholders, executive, and other other teams along with presenting project plans and continuous status updates to ensure smooth transitions into each new component brought online.

The end result was that we significantly reduced the server load and increased performance without service interruptions and enabled forward development of the systems.

oDropped server load from well over 18% down to under 1% utilization.

oReduced turn around for client website delivery from roughy 2-3 weeks down to 3-4 hrs.

oHigh-end optimization which reduced page load times from 17.63s avg down to less than 0.48ms avg.

oSaved well over 205 man hours per week by completely streamlining and automating key services.

oWebsite delivery system included online building of client websites with dashboards allowing for easy updates of content.

oIntroduced mobile responsive websites which were a significant improvement in quality across the many types of devices viewing the site.

Environment: PHP, Web Services, RSS, Social APIs, CSS3, XML, HTML5, XHTML, JSON, jQuery, Ajax, MySQL, Postgres, Paypal, Authorize.net, Stripe, Coinbase, Intuit, Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, Instagram
