EXPERIENCE

Bentronics

Machinist/ Toolmaker

2000 to Present

Bentronics is a custom equipment company specializing in the solar energy field. They design custom machines for use in manufacturing solar cells. They have built machines for Siemens, Sun power, Sanyo, and several others. They design, machine, assemble and install the equipment in the customer’s factories. They have an excellent reputation for producing high production, long lasting, and user friendly equipment. This business is closing, as most of the solar business is overseas at present.

At Bentronics, I found myself doing a large part of the machining on the various parts of the equipment, as the runs were short and the tolerances were very tight. Much of the equipment was vacuum related, so the weld integrity had to be very good, and the surface finishes on the parts less than 15 micro-inches. We followed the principles of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement, and always followed OSHA guidelines as to safety practices.

Arco Solar (Later Siemens Solar, Shell Solar, Solar World)

Camarillo, Ca.

1979 to 2000

As manager of new equipment development, I had at my disposal a complete machine shop. Since my background is a prototype machinist, I would often machine the more critical parts myself, both to assure us of a quality part and because I enjoyed the work. This also kept my skills current. We built much of the equipment used in the manufacture of the solar cells and panels. We received patents on many of our developments. Our improvements resulted in savings of over 10 million dollars per year, in labor and materials.

Much of our machining work was measured in microns, and a tolerance of .0001” was not unusual.

Cincinnati Millacron

1976-1979

Equipment Engineering Manager

In this capacity, I was responsible for the operation, maintenance, and development for all equipment used by Cincinnati Millacron. This included grinding, deposition, slicing, polishing, plating, and inspection equipment. Equipment improvements and new designs resulted in savings of millions of dollars per year.

KAYEX- ROCHESTER, N.Y.

Chief Machinist/Toolmaker

In Rochester we had a European based apprentice program led by old school German tool makers. As such, we became experts in the use of all standard machine shop equipment such as milling machines, lathes, grinders, including I.D., O.D., Blanchard, centerless, and surface. We also learned other skills such as welding, plating, and heat treating. This training has served me well in the machine building trade. I started as a machinist, and advanced to application engineer before leaving for a better position.
