Schlumberger, WesternGeco (formerly Western Geophysical), Houston, TX : 1989 - 2003

Sr. Geophysicist, Special Processing Group: 1998 – 2003

Responsibilities:

Analyzed, validated and implemented latest R & D technology, primarily related to depth migration, for the production groups worldwide.

Achievements:

Implemented automated velocity workflows to the depth groups, thereby reduced model building and updating time substantially in comparison to manual work earlier. These flows were developed by using new Omega SFMs (Seismic Function Modules) & were tested extensively on client’s marine and land datasets from Cairo region.

Implemented grid, layer and common image point (CIP) tomographic workflows, over 3 years span, to the depth groups. Since velocity treatment by these techniques is of 3D nature, models produced by them were better than conventional 1D technique. Grid tomography found to be most successful for simple geological settings. Layer based tomography found to be better suited for complex geological settings but had layer controlled velocities in them. CIP is most sophisticated under both simple and complex geological settings and it works on depth gathers, rather than on stacking velocities, as was the case for the above two techniques. It was also observed that these tomographic techniques could also be applied to improve the already existed 1 models. Workflows were developed using different software – Omega SFMs, Mimic (Landmark), Charisma (GeoQuest) and Stanford viewer package. Also, workflows were thoroughly tested for marine & land datasets from different regions of world – Alaska, Cairo, GOM, London and Stavanger.

A major prestack depth migration true amplitude study was presented to the R&D to show them the relationship between processing parameters selected and amplitude variations seen, which were unrelated to the geology. This testing was carried out for all different pieces of software used in depth migration group, including the latest Mig2K (EDS, PC based company). Workflows were tested on SEG velocity model & impulses created on SEG seismic dataset.

Implemented AVO and Prestack seismic inversion workflows for the Seismic Reservoir group for pore pressure prediction and shallow water hazards studies. Developed workflows by using Omega & Standalone program known as Generic Algorithm inversion, which is a full wave equation inverse modeling program and uses Monte Carlo approach. This study involved R&D group, interpretation group, seismic reservoir group and petrophysical group. Workflows were tested on client’s deep-water dataset from Cairo region.

Implemented workflows for marine production groups, which corrected for static shifts caused due to water velocity variations in the deep-water surveys. These workflows were developed by using Omega and Prototype SFMs and were tested on deep-water surveys from Green Canyon & Brazil regions.

Sr. Geophysicist, Software Testing and Software Support group: 1989 – 1997

Responsibilities: Tested and benchmarked, batch and interactive applications of newly developed Omega seismic software package on different Unix platforms. Provided Omega’s evaluation and support to domestic and international clients.

Achievements:

Developed Omega workflows, which were successfully used on Onboard processing quality control.

Successful in Omega evaluation by 3 major international oil companies from USA and China.

Successfully provided Omega onsite support to Houston and London production groups.

Western Geophysical, Singapore: 1980 - 1989

Marine Group Leader, 3D Processing: 1986 – 1989

Responsibilities: Processed the data from demultiplexing through migration to filming.

Achievements:

Completed two large projects in three years. Both projects belonged to major international oil companies.

Issues such as - Navigational, Geometry, Tidal variations to account for, Foldage variations, Flexing, 3D velocity processing and QC, DMO and 2 pass post stack time migration and finally merging with vintage 2D surveys; all involved intense planning and record keeping to complete these projects.

Transitional Group Leader, 2D Processing: 1984 – 1985

Responsibilities: Processed the data from demultiplexing through migration to filming.

Achievements:

Completed two large projects, including one crooked line shot in the river. Both projects belonged to Indian National Oil Company. Previous experience of marine processing, learning of land processing related issues such as surface noise attenuation, manual and amplitude control editing, geometry, statics and derivation of matching operators to compensate for three different sources and two different receivers and planning were all put together to complete these projects.

Marine Group Leader, 2D Processing: 1980 – 1983

Responsibilities: Processed the data from demultiplexing through migration to filming.

Achievements:

Completed 8 projects during the span of 3 years. All the projects belonged to major international oil companies operating in regions from Indian Ocean, South China Sea, Java Sea and Timor Sea. Extreme planning and hard work was carried out in understanding the suite of programs used in full processing sequence, testing and approval of production parameters from client, building master workflows, training the geophysical technicians, job submissions, QC of output sections and printouts, interaction with the clients and delivering of the final imaged sections on the films.
