Assistant Nurse Manager

Complete patient care of pediatric hematology/oncology/BMT patients. Duties include, but are not limited to, vital signs, hanging blood products, administering both allogeneic and autologous bone marrow transplants, administering medications/chemotherapy, being aware of any changes in a patient status, performing daily head to toe assessments, and being a liaison between patients and families and their team of doctors. Work with central venous lines and portacaths.

Duties as an assistant manager include being in charge of 15-20 direct reports and helping with their development. In charge of equipment and supplies and managing supply costs, joint commission readiness and backup to the unit scheduler. Also part of the code blue committee and advisor to the unit Equipment/Technology and Clinical Practice council.

Complete patient care including but not limited to vital signs, administering medications and respiratory treatments, starting IVs and performing venipunctures, being aware of any changes in a patient status, performing head to toe assessments, and being a liaison between patients and families and the ED physicians.

-Responsible for reviewing and revising ED specific policies and procedures, providing education to staff in regards to new policies

-Responsible for creating an exemplar explaining the role of each of our ED committees, editing exemplars from other ED nurses, and choosing a nurse to write a specific exemplar and then following up with her throughout the process to make sure it was completed on time and to the best of her ability.

Provided education to entire nursing staff in regards to ED dowtime procedures. I recognized there was a need for staff to review the procedures and then took my ideas to the leadership team, chose 2 nurses to help me and educated them on the procedures and the scenario that staff would have to complete. I was responsible for making sure that each nurse was educated and that my team was completing their education in a timely manner. We completed the project in 6 months. I then educated the Scottish Rite ED resource nurses about downtime procedures and the scenario so they could educate their nurses as well.
