Backend development team in early-stage startup; RESTful APIs, microservices, data content, interfacing with front-end, data science, infrastructure and QA engineering and Product management teams. Refactoring core database-oriented click-and-conversion persistence model into a performant modern streaming lambda architecture on cloud-based Amazon Web Services platforms.

Reporting to VP, responsible for about 15 ICs in four “core” software engineering teams: Ad Serving cloud/server stack, Mobile Client Developer SDK Apple iOS & Android, Web-based admin & customer dashboard and Data Engineering, Architecture & Infrastructure, interfaces to Data Science, BI reporting subsystems. Integrated 16 ad hoc stacks into RESTful API Search-as-a-Service platform, for new product development and high-availability (HA) online operations for profitable social-discovery site with 300 million members (comparable to LinkedIn or Google+) generating 500 million search engine transactions per day. Led “big data” elastic, cloud, graph, natural language (NLP), machine learning (ML) & semantic search, algorithms & prototyping for innovative and profitable new Product, Social Discovery, Relevance, Security, Analytics and Quality initiatives.

Algorithms and tools for massively parallel distributed indexing pipeline for disruptive natural language search engine. Java, JSON, Ruby-on-Rails on Amazon EC2/S3 cloud system, Hadoop, map-reduce, test-driven development (TDD).

Consultancy delivering advanced software engineering and management services, from mature organizations through start-ups. Java (J2EE) constraint engine for object-oriented business process management in finance, mortgage and insurance and deployments based on commercial business rules, semantic web, configuration and 3D graphics packages. Advanced technology IC "guru"; responsibilities from architecture to hands-on code development (primarily C Originally reported to CTO; pure technology charter (no management) to incorporate AI into Siebel's business software systems. Accomplished a range of assignments as company grew from 100-emloyee pre-IPO start-up to 8000-employee global public company.

Consultancy specializing in management services, development, multimedia titles patents and emerging technologies. Interim VP R&D for McAfee Associates, reporting to President/COO, responsible for all engineering of US public software company reorganized R&D into functions and product groups; established QA, documentation and technical operations; initiated product management and development processes. Also designed Educational/Creativity Game (target ages 5-11) for SEGA Genesis with Head Games ("Wacky Worlds", released Fall '94).

1990–1992: Director, Advanced Technology, Autodesk Inc Sausalito, CA

Reported to President/CEO. Supervised ~30 positions, including software designers, developers test & documention engineers, product and business managers, marketing and telesales, academic interns, professional and strategic services staff. Annual budget US $3M. Actuals managed within 1%. Deliverables included: secure object-oriented functional programming “Trusty Scheme” authoring system for multimedia/; sophisticated “Virtual Reality” C++ class library (~600pp documentation, drafted product plan, covering features, marketing, pricing, channels, support 3rd-party program etc.); shrink-wrap Retail Educational Software titles (including marketing, advertising, telesales, P&L exceeded revenue targets by >50%); managed corporate technical library, print and media collections and online services, Technical Forums and other programs; strategic planning: developed future technology scenarios (Global Business Network methodology), developed demonstration prototypes of new products.
