Gamma is a broad initiative that seeks to transform the ABS network business, starting with six major work streams as the key near-term opportunities. The SDN Ethernet work stream involves creation of a new Layer 2 Ethernet offer by utilizing SDN technology to control network elements such as the IPAG and EMT.

New service features such as bandwidth on demand and calendaring

The scope of this project is SDN Ethernet Phase 1, and the goal is to launch a live, customer-ready SDN-enabled Ethernet offer in the Austin, TX market by the end of June 2014. The ordering and provisioning process for this service will be fully automated for qualified customer locations. In subsequent phases after the Austin launch (out of scope for this document), AT&T will roll out the SDN Ethernet service to other metro locations and introduce SDN enabled Layer 3 network services (MIS, VPN).
