Professional Statement

Just for the same reason I chose computer engineering as my major, I believe interest is the determinate power to make performance outstanding instead of ordinary, no matter studying or working. It’s my hobby to dabble at various originalities of computer related industrial solutions, Also, I’d like to stay up to date on new IT trends and related technical breakthroughs. It is no doubt that information technology will keep bringing surprises to our life. That’s why when I first saw this position on website, I knew it’s the position I’m seeking for.

Secondly, my skills and experiences make me quite a generalist for academic qualification. The BS&MS degrees I got cover comprehensive fields in Electric/Computer Engineering. The major Automation in Chinese University mainly refers to the electrical/power related discipline, which is similar to Electrical Engineering in U.S. colleges, but more focusing on the industrial control field. Thus I did the circuit design and embedded firmware development (PIC, AVR) to realize certain industrial control purpose, and also dealt with driver, power electric devices (AC/DC, PWM etc.). While in graduate school, I specialized my concentration in investigate algorithms for image processing applying on FPGA. Besides, I extend my horizon to quantum mechanics and semiconductor devices, focusing on the internal mechanisms of PV material, and did research/experimental work following my professor from MIT.

(Master Project Intro: Traditional methods to apply DCT will occupy large amount of multipliers, I raised this FPGA-optimized fast realization using row/column separation algorithm and pipelined processing, by reusing the ROM units and multipliers/adders to achieve a better trade of between processing speed and recourses utilization (logic units, power consumption).)

In addition, throughout years of first-hand professional experience, I acquired relevant projects design principals within power electrical devices especially solar energy utilizations. During 2010 to 2011, I was involved in a team who researched on renewable energy, as assistant engineer of Institute of Water Resources for Pastoral Area, China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR). By taking part in and following them, I had a comprehensive grasp of the essential sections for the customer oriented solar energy projects, including feasibility report, system design, schematic drawing, installation and testing/trouble shooting, as well as how to deal with overall/specific engineering problem from the view of an engineer, like the tradeoff between performance and cost (material, labor, time, space, management). Especially, I engaged in the development work for 3kw Solar PV Water Pumping Project and take charge of realizing a method to keep the solar panel working at maximum power point.

(PV Pumping MPPT System Intro: The P-V character of solar cell is the single-peak (MPP) function. In order to achieve the MPPT, voltage interfering method is applied to keep working point as close to Pmax point as possible, which means after setting up the interference voltage (PWM variance), comparing the difference between current and previous output power, and then adjusting the voltage (PWM) backwards/towards from its original direction along the V- axis based on the result of comparison step to monitor whether the maximum output is achieved.

In this a typical closed-loop control design, the MPPT is actually the self optimize procedure. The EM78 microchip is the controller which has A/D and PWM port, taking solar cell’s output voltage/current value (by hall sensor) as inputs and giving the modified PWM after comparison. For the purpose of technical verification, slider-type rheostat W2 is used as variable load.)

Besides the exact circuit design, it also deserves to be mentioned the other missions I completed during that time: calculations (solar recourses, power consumption, shadow, distance between panels etc. by software), equipment field installation (PV panels, drivers, small wind turbines), and the related experiments of renewable energy. Like this “Wind Turbine Vehicle Mounted Test” is used to record the relation between the turbine’s rotation rates and schedule wind speed (given by the driving truck) with different pitch angle. For every setting angle, record the data under wind speed of 3.5m/s 12m/s.
