PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCES

(1) Developer of Point of Care Medical Diagnostic Device ($1.1M project) 09/2011~present

Led a team composed of undergrad, PhD, postdoc, doctor/physician and statistician to develop an innovative

medical device for point of care diagnosis.

Worked cooperatively with team members, coordinated and managed the project. Responsible for all

aspects: concepts, design, prototyping, testing, revision, protocols, documentation, meeting, reporting,

etc. Created and executed plans, assigned actions, achieved goals within schedule and budget.

“Customer” oriented, worked closely with hospitals by regularly meeting with doctors/physicians. Learned

clinical demands/feedback, derived/presented design features and updated engineering designs

accordingly. Integrated together Systems, Software, Hardware and User Experience/Human Factors to

build the prototype device. Planned and conducted clinical studies of testing ~200 clinical human

specimens, and analyzed results to verify and validate the prototype.

Product development (Technical/Engineering experiences):

Designed and prototyped a novel cartridge (disposable) to collect analytes from human body fluids for

realizing fast (~ 1 hour) point of care diagnosis instead of long-term (days) manually pathology analysis.

Experiences in metal/plastic components design, injection molding, sealing, & rapid prototyping.

Created 2D engineering drawings and established fabrication process flow for mass production.

Designed and made a special fixture/jig for milling fabrication to save machining time by 10 times

(5mins -> 30secs). Fabricated 200 units of cartridge using resin injection casting, milling, drilling, CNC.

Hands-on experiences in machining tools.

Designed and built a movable module to load/fix specimen, and align (<10 micron) the specimen to

diagnostic signal acquisition. Designed and made mechanical connector between servo motor and

positioning stage. Experiences in moving parts design, positioning design, and GD&T.

Designed and built a control module with human machine interface (HMI) to automate positioning and

diagnostic signal acquisition. Established communication between I/O engine and LabVIEW platform.

Experiences in electronics and control.

Designed packaging to incorporate all sub-modules into a low-cost portable device which can be used

at point of care environment. Experiences in sheet metals, layout design and assembly.

Experiences in IRB filings for human subject research approval; trained on CITI program; have knowledge

of FDA 510(k), 21 CFR 820, ISO 13485, and six sigma yellow belt trained. Strong skills at technical writing

and results presentations. Patent writing Experiences. Proposals and reports writing experiences.

(2) Technician of Optics/Spectroscopy in Akkus Labs (Bioengineering labs), CWRU 10/2012~present

Designed and built optics setups to evaluate/optimize experimental parameters. Designed light path,

conducted laser alignment, assembled optics components. Responsible for maintenance and trouble

shooting of sophisticated spectroscopy instruments.

Conducted Raman spectroscopic analysis of different materials (e.g. biomaterials, electrochemical

materials, carbon nanomaterials). Experiences with various laser sources (532, 660, 690, 785, 1064 nm).

Hands-on experiences with fiber optics, diode lasers. Trained on laser safety.

(3) Research Assistant in National (China) Key Laboratory of Mechanical System 09/2008~03/2011

Helped to build 3-DOF platform using linear guidways, direct drive motors, photoelectric switches.

Programmed C++ code to control motions. Experiences in electromechanical system design.

Designed and built electromechanical setup to test the precision/repeatability of servo motion.

Generated 3D CAD modeling, and evaluated/validated parameters for a micro positioning stage using FEA.

Programmed code to recover images from fragmentary data using compressed sensing. Programmed code

to decode signals for brain computer interface (BCI) using machine learning algorithm. Experiences in

programming, and numerical analysis.

(4) Teaching Assistant at CWRU

“Introduction to Musculo-skeletal Biomechanics”, fall 2012, fall 2013 and fall 2014. Taught graduate

students to apply CAD and finite element analysis (FEA) in orthopaedic problems. Helped to improve the

course to become the “Core Course” in Mechanical Engineering Dept.

“Mechanical Engineering Measurements Labs”, spring 2014. Designed and set up experiments/tests for

students about LVDT, mechanical oscillation, bending, and fluid mechanics.
