DETAILED WORK EXPERIENCE
September 1996 to 1st June,2015 : Qatar Petroleum, Doha, Qatar.
Position Held : Lead Project Engineer
Principal Responsibilities:
Was responsible for new offshore and infrastructure projects and existing structures
covering FEED and implementation:
New wellhead jackets, pipelines and umbilical projects;
Modifications to topsides or pipelines;
Replacement of pipelines;
Budget and schedule;
Procurement of materials including evaluation, monitoring of the vendors progress;
Support to other departments on offshore structures.
Subsea Cable project
Projects Handled
NEW Wellhead Jacket for North Field Alpha: The project called for new wellhead
jacket urgently as well tubing of existing wells is corroded and needs work over. Work
over of existing wells will require shutdown of wellhead jacket meaning loss of crucial
gas for industries in Mesaieed of Qatar for 2 years. Due to criticality of the project, we
decided to implement it unusual way. This wellhead jacket is different from earlier
wellhead jackets as it handles gas and has number of utilities onboard. We are going
to make jacket and temporary deck available for drilling while we carryout Pre-FEED
and FEED for Topsides, pipelines and modification on receiving complex. PIN was
approved in Feb 2014 and budget is around USD 300million. FEED for Topsides,
pipelines and modifications awarded to Ranhill WorleyParsons, Kuala Lumpur and I
was assigned role of Project Manager posted in Consultant office with complete team
to oversee FEED. Was in that position till reorganization occurred in Qatar Petroleum.
SUBSEA Power Cable Project for Halul: The project calls for 2 numbers of 132kV
submarine cables to supply power to Halul Island from shore. The island is 100kms
away and includes substation at each end and have logistic constraints of weight of
cable on a single ship while installation as well as delivery duration. Managed the
FEED which was carried out by Worley Parsons Qatar in record eight months including
geophysical and geotechnical surveys on the route. The cost of project is USD 550
million and has schedule contract completion in 48 months i.e till June 2016. Both
cables are installed and burial of cable ongoing. Was asked to shift in Jan end 2015 for
North Field Alpha wellhead jacket project.
SUBSEA Power Cable Project for NFA: The project calls for one numbers of 66kV
submarine cables to supply power to NFA platform from shore. The island is 80kms
away and includes substation at shore and modifications on the offshore platform to
receive power. We also require hot oil heaters to be provided as WHRU will not be
able to provide hot oil when receiving power from shore. Managed the FEED which
was carried out by WorleyParsons Qatar. Project was shelved based on cost increase
from Feasibility to FEED by multiple times.
BH-I03, BH-M04 and BH-D05 WHJ and associated pipelines and Modifications :
We had carried out conceptual study/Feasibility and provided inputs to the new
statement of Requirement including optimized pipeline and umbilical routing, cost,
schedule and Environmental Authorization. The FEED was carried out in-house in QP
and took more than usual time as additional miscellaneous pipelines scope got added
at last minute. Total of 16 projects were included in EPIC scope as FEED undertaken
by QP. The tendering was also tricky as had 3 Iranian bidders who had not done any
international works. The award was done in April 2006 for subject works for cost of
approx. USD 260 million. The project was delayed at each phase of Engineering,
procurement, fabrication and installation. The hook-up and modifications works
involved work on 26 existing platforms and was a logistics nightmare. Finally work was
completed and commissioned in July2009.
MFM Project: This project started in 1999 was handed over in 2005. The Multiphase
Flow Meter at that time was an advance technology and provided the oil/gas/water
quantities without actually separating the well fluid. The project stages involved calling
all MFM suppliers for trial testing during bidding stage and technical evaluation was
based on the trials. The implementation part of MFMs on existing wellhead jackets
were taken up in parallel and engineering carried out by Engineering Consultant and
QP procured the materials. The installation contract was awarded separately and 16
MFMs were installed on 12 whjs. The platform modifications required shutdowns to
commission the MFM's. The MFM was based on use of radioactive source and Qatar
had implemented in-between new law for radiographic sources and had to streamline
the licenses required for QP & Contractor to actually get sources in Qatar and to
offshore locations. The closeout involves settling of claims by contractor as some of
the delays were attributable to new law and QP supplied materials. Project cost US $
7 million.
Water mist and HSSD on Process Complex: The project was basically to remove
Halon Fire suppression and provide suitable alternate fire suppression system. This
involves provision of water mist system in 3 RGTs and AEG turbine in PS-2, 4 RGTs
and AEG turbine in PS-3, 2 RGTs and 2 generators in PS-4 and HSSD(High
Sensitivity Smoke Detection) in LQ of PS-4. The project was finished with delay in
schedule as platform modifications required extensive shutdowns. Project cost was US
$ 3.5 million.
Miscellaneous Projects: The projects involved well hook-ups, platform modifications,
provision of ESD valves, sub sea isolation valves etc. The works were detailed in-
house, materials procured and installed using in-house resources. The miscellaneous
works like instrumentation and telemetry are contracted out. In one instance, we
carried out conceptual study for Umbilical required, procured the umbilical directly and
installed using QPs DP vessel. FEED and detail engineering done by QP in-house.
BH-N09 WHJ and associated pipelines: Involved from conceptual study/Feasibility
till handover of the platform and associated pipelines and platform modifications.
FEED done by QP in-house. The platform is designed for a 20m-water depth with a
jacket configuration of 4+0 and 48 pile size. The pipeline sizes are 6", 8" and 12" with
total pipeline length of 10km and X-60/X-65 material grade. Scope included
modifications on 3 existing platforms. Project cost was US $20 million.
MM-IO5 WHJ, associated pipelines and 2 replacement pipelines in MM Field:
Involved from conceptual study/Feasibility till handover of the platform and associated
pipelines and platform modifications. FEED done by QP in-house. The platform is
designed for 35m water depth with a jacket configuration of 4+0 and 48 pile size. The
pipeline sizes are 6" and 8" with total pipeline length of 5km and X-60/X-65 material
grade. Scope included modifications on process complex. Platform and facilities
handed over Aug 2002. Project cost was US$ 19 million.
MM-G07, BH-G09 and BH-M05 Well Head Jackets (WHJ) and associated
pipelines in MM & BH Field: Involved from conceptual study/Feasibility till handover
of the platform and associated pipelines and platform modifications. FEED done by QP
in-house. The project involved extensive modifications on existing jackets/platforms,
which were detailed and executed with in-house resources. The platforms were
designed for 45 m to 15m-water depth. The jacket configuration was 4+0 for all
jackets. The deck lift weight is 450MT and the jacket weight varied between 300 MT to
500MT. The Pile size used was 48 and 60. The pipeline sizes varied from 6" to16"
with total pipeline length of 50km and X-60/X-65 material grade. The pipelines and
topsides for MM-G08 wellhead jacket were also included in this project. Platform and
facilities handed over Aug 2000 and closed accounts in 2001 including settlement of
claims by the contractor. Project cost US$75 million.
MM-G08 Well Head Jacket: Involved from conceptual study/Feasibility till handover of
the platform for drilling. FEED done by QP in-house. The platform is designed for a
35m-water depth with a jacket configuration of 4+0 and 48 pile size. The platform was
required to be relocated due to pile refusal in calceranite layer. Scope included
modifications on process complex. Project cost US$7 million.
BH-D07 WHJ, associated pipelines and Uwainet segregation in BH Field: Involved
from conceptual study/Feasibility till handover of the platform and associated pipelines
and platform modifications. FEED done by QP in-house.This project involved
installation of collection of Uwainet wells(XXHP) separately and flowing to XXHP
separator at PS-3 complex. The pipeline size varied from 6" to 12" with total pipeline
length of 57km and X-60/X-65 material grade. The platform is designed for a 45m-
water depth with a jacket configuration of 4+0 and 48 pile size. The platform was
required to be relocated due to pile refusal in calceranite layer. Project cost US$ 36
million.
BH-K05 WHJ, Flare and flare bridges installation: The installation contract for this
project was already awarded and was involved in execution of the project after joining.
This project was special as the contractor had only fabrication facilities and had lacked
project management skills and we assisted him with installation of the structures and
pipelay. The project was delayed by one and half years and finally completed in 1998.
The awarded project cost was US$ 24.6 million.
