Current Research Involvement

1. Investigated relationships between in vitro assessment of leukocyte function, serum antibody titers, and clinical parameters of specific periodontal disease states.

2. Assessment of indicators of periodontal disease activity with gingival crevicular fluid.

3. Clinical investigation of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as adjective therapy in treatment of periodontitis. Involvement in several longitudinal multi-center studies as Project Director of UW activities. Specific responsibilities on these 1-2 year patient studies included overall management of project, overseeing of data collection, and patient treatment.

4. Assessment of digital subtraction radiography as an aid in determining benefits of periodontal therapy. Completed projects included subtraction and analysis of radiographs produced in a multi-center longitudinal investigation of response to conservative periodontal therapy. Currently producing standardized radiographs as component of multi-center assessment of adjunctive pharmaceutical interventions in conservative periodontal therapy.

5. Completed segment of clinical trial of gingival fluid enzyme test kit designed as clinical aid in periodontal disease activity detection. Involved treatment of patients and evaluation of test kit responses with therapy. Currently director of further clinical trials of the device.

6. Investigated on commercial contract the use of a dental scintillation probe for detection of bone turnover as measured by radioisotope activity around teeth. Relationship of this activity with gingival fluid components with disease activity were investigated.

7. Developed questionnaire with other faculty members for detection of patient-perceived differences with regards to outcomes with different periodontal therapeutic modalities. Pilot investigation of the sensitivity of this instrument was carried out on private periodontal patients.

8. Investigated the effects of a sonic toothbrush on plaque removal, gingivitis reduction, and extrinsic dental stain removal in 2 separate studies.

9. Infection control measures, especially water-line contamination in dental units.

10. University of Washington Project Director for multi-center longitudinal investigation of a topical pharmaceutical intervention combined with periodontal therapy in arresting bone loss in periodontal disease.
