ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) is predominantly seen within the realm of data warehousing and business intelligence domains in various huge customer base Organisations. Even the same is followed in Orange too.

The Orange ETL architecture has been constructed with the integration of disparate systems in mind. As a system in its own right, the ETL architecture can be used to ensure 2 external applications using differing interfaces so that they can correctly communicate with each other, thereby providing increased synergy and value to the business.

The ETL system is a major part of the Orange Enterprise Integration Architecture consisting of 35 major applications, 200+ interfaces, 1500 graphs, processing approximately 4 terabytes of data (45 billion records) per day. It is central to Orange’s integration architecture. These applications are developed and supported using Ab-Initio tool by ETL team.

DESCRIPTION:

CSS system is the heart of Orange’s business holding the information about all of its mobile and landline customers. Orange had about 11 million customers but the database used for holding this crucial information is a legacy hosted by Informix database tool, which cannot support Data mining and large scale data analysis. So this project launched with the objective of Integrating CSS system with Datawarehouse. Briefly, the idea was to provide a solution to migrate customer data to Datawarehouse as both and onetime activity and a permanent mechanism to push delta data on a daily basis.

Having known the requirement, the challenge was to deal with the mammoth data and device a mechanism to smoothly implement this integration solution within the stringent timeline, i.e. to analyze the entire CSS system which consisted of over 40 subject areas built upon over 200 tables.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

To study and analyze Business/Technical requirement and High level Design

Interaction with Design team and Project head for any additional requirements gathering

Preparation of Low level design documents for each deliverable

Development of applications as per design requirements

Integration of different modules of the project and performing Integration testing

Assisting QA testing with knowledge sharing for test cases preparation.

Fixing defects and providing Dev support for QA testing

Applications undergo frequent changes which may be a design change coming in as Work package or a bug fix coming as an STK. Value adds such as performance improvements form an integral part of work package in ETL team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Providing 3rd line support for Data Integration Support Team to provide code fixes to problem tickets raised and also help them investigate Incidents most efficiently and effectively.

Investigate Problem tickets and provide solutions and if necessary make changes to the code that do not affect design but help to improve performance to meet KPIs even more efficiently

Co-coordinating with release control to ensure ETL L3 team bug fixes are released along with the monthly scheduled releases for problems with workaround and arrange to release critical problems at the earliest not to impact business.

Conducting unit testing of code fixes as well as supporting QA testing on requirement basis.

Preparing Test exit reports for releasing to QA and helping QA testing to prepare test cases.

Assisting Development teams to understand any existing applications and to help them do Impact assessment flawless

Reviewing existing heavy applications to check if there is any scope to improve them without affecting their base design, which would help Operations to meet their SLAs better.

DESCRIPTION:

In computing, a Datawarehouse (DWH) is a database used for reporting and data analysis. It is a central repository of data which is created by integrating data from one or more disparate sources. Data warehouses store current as well as historical data and are used for creating trending reports for senior management reporting such as annual and quarterly comparisons.

A typical ETL-based Datawarehouse involves three stages - Extract, Transform and Load. In the preliminary stage raw data is extract from various operational systems or the data may be made available by the third party jobs. In the later stages the extracted raw data is transformed as per the Business Rules into more clean and well-ordered for easy reporting by Data Users and then is loaded into the Datawarehouse. Though these activities look simple the time is the most important aspect here. It is the sole responsibility of the team to ensure that all these activities take place within their defined SLA(Service Level Agreement) and Database is up and running for Data Users for Business Reporting.
