March 2014 - February 2015: Kaeru Cafe

I taught English on one Saturday a month to children ages ranging from 5-12 years old, with classes having 4-7 students. Classes were 40 minutes duration. Due to the range of ages and English levels, the English learned had to be in flexible classes that all students might enjoy.

After the children's lesson, I would lead a group discussion of 4-6 adults in various communication topics including Japanese traditions vis-a-vis Australian traditions : for example, the use of “a” and “the” in a typical English sentence etc.

Employment Skills

Teaching and Tutoring Skills:

•I regularly was asked to create whole lessons (45 minute lessons), either on a topic the teacher wanted, or something that I wanted to teach. These lessons were sometimes created days before class, but sometimes minutes before! I was, accordingly, flexible to the needs of the teacher and students.

•I provided and made my own materials for games, making them by hand or on a computer as needed. I remain willing to make any resources a teacher or student may need to prepare for class.

•I had meetings with teachers to organise the class activities for the English class. We worked together to decide what would work best in each class. Every class was different and I wanted to address those differences.

•If a student wanted to explore an idea out of the set class structure, I was willing to take a new path and explore it : for example, new words or communication styles or reading material. My aim was to be flexible and open to the students' needs.

•I have undergone various training regimes for my position as teacher assistant, having regular meetings and yearly training activities, after my basic training with Altia central (4 days), and my own TEFL online course.

Customer Service Skills :

•ability to demonstrate confident product knowledge to assist customer decision-making at Woolworths Deli, The Coffee Club and Aldi;

•ability to work quickly and efficiently at busy times, making 10 coffees at a time at The Coffee Club or scanning at a average rate of 800 products a minute.

Team Work and Leadership Skills :

•ability to work in a team environment with different people, sharing roles to meet customer needs.

•arranging breaks and allocating specific jobs at Woolworths and taking responsibility for night staff when manager was absent.

•able to work independently without supervision particularly at night at Woolworths.

I enjoy reading fantasy, writing works of fiction and jogging. In Japan, I also learned Taiko (performance drumming) with a Japanese group and have performed with this group at events. I have also learned to play the piano and the guitar.

Availability

I am available most days. However, due to family comitments, I would prefer not to work on Wednesdays.
