CAREER GOALS:

Apply my engineering, automated manufacturing, and problem-solving skills in an innovative and productive manner with an efficiency-oriented organization to the betterment of said organization and continual improvement of my personal skill-set.

WORK HISTORY:

Oct. 1998 – Current: Optimation, Inc.

Sr. Application Engineer – install, maintain, upgrade, and support custom NC programming and sheet metal nesting software on clients’ platforms. Secondary functions include tech. support for customers software via phone and remote connections, documentation of processes/methods, consulting for improvements and database integration for part ordering/tracking. Periodic travel to customers’ facilities for on-site software work, integration with existing systems, training, custom documentation, and lean-manufacturing consulting.

Accomplishments: Coordinate support and upgrades of existing customers with upcoming projects for ease of installation. Focus on cost vs. benefit results to add value to the customer’s production chain. Implement open-source software as needed to reduce costs and increase value for customers and in-house. Implement time/cost study processes.

EDUCATION:

August 1993 – May 1998: University of Kansas, School of Engineering (Lawrence, KS)

Majored in Mechanical Engineering with focus on CAD/CAM, Bachelors of Science degree. Fundamentals of Engineering exam in April 1998. Elective focus: 22 credit hours of Russian language studies.

May 1998 – July 1998: St. Petersburg State University, Smolniy Sobor campus (St. Petersburg, Russia) Studied the Russian language with emphasis on conversational usage and reading of contemporary and technical literature. Secondary emphasis on contextual translation into the English lexicon. Total of 8 credit hours, graduate-level.

MANUFACTURING SKILLS:

General:

Rules-based nesting and programming (Optimation® software primarily), emphasis on balancing machine capabilities within context of “real-world” benefits, nest & programming efficiency tracking, order management and 2-way database integration with nesting software (MRP/ERP, Kanban, Oracle, etc.). Also skilled with troubleshooting programming and output issues based on part output and tooling (“looking at the physical part”), code errors, controller errors, and visual cues.

CAD Programming:

Emphasis on precision and “clean” drawings for importation/programming. Use of layers, linetypes, and colors to differentiate process-types/operations. Primarily focused on 2D CAD but 3D practiced as well with unfold operations. Standardization of CAD geometry emphasized (“KISS” rule) and practices. Firm believer in “good stuff in, good stuff out” (and its opposite). Prefer taking extra time to make “good” CAD geometry so that programming it is easier and more stable.

Data Analysis:

Generate reports (content varies based on process type) from nesting processes and analyze to verify nesting efficiency, part-costing, and time-studies. Emphasis is on “intelligent” optimization: balancing machine through-put with material utilization and machine run-time within operational limits.

Contour Processes:

Laser (Trumpf, Bystronic, Mazak, Alabama, Finnpower, Mitsubishi, and Cincinnati, etc.), flame/plasma (MG, Messer, Hypertherm), water jet (PAR, FLOW, Ingersoll-Rand), ultrasonic knife (AGFM, Lectra).

Programming features commonly used:

Common-cut, toolpath avoidance, custom lead-in/out construction/configuration, tabbing, skeleton/scrap cutting, variable feed rates depending on cut geometry, marking/etching, sheet-chopping, remnants, irregular material shapes.

Controller familiarity:

Siemens, Bosch (Trumpf lasers), Maz-trol (Mazak), Mitsubishi, GE/Fanuc

Punch Processes:

Punch-only with turrets (Amada, Finnpower, Murata/Weidemann, Salvagnini, Trumpf, Strippit), punch-contour (Whitney [with or without turret], Trumpf, Amada), punch-shear (Amada, Salvagnini, Finnpower), router machines (KOMO, Thermwood, Shoda).

Programming features commonly used:

Common-punching, tool changer management, lead-in/out construction (punch-contour & routers only), micro-tab/micro-joints, repositions, clamp dead zones, nesting beneath clamps (both with normal sheets and irregular material shapes), forming operations (louvers, counter-sinks, etc.), “canned” cycle nibbling.

Controller familiarity:

Siemens (Trumpf), GE/Fanuc

COMPUTER SKILLS:

Personal Computers:

Extensive knowledge of MS-DOS, MS-Windows XP/Vista/7/8 including networking, administration, system configuration (hardware and software), operating system installation, maintenance, and spyware/malware eradication. Intimate familiarity with, Microsoft Office, MKS Toolkit version 6.x to 9.x (UNIX-PC inter-operability), and Cygwin 1.7+ (open-source UNIX-PC inter-operability). Working knowledge of AutoCAD.

UNIX/Linux Environments:

Working knowledge of HP-UX 10/11, Sun-Solaris 2.6, 7, 8,and 9, AIX 4-3-3, SGI IRIX 6.x, and Linux including basic system administration, X-Windows usage and basic configuration, shell-scripting (Korn shell and BASH shell). Emphasis has been on command-line/script usage and debugging for system administration, customer support, scripting for text processing and menu-based user-interface for applications, and inter-operability between traditional PC operations and UNIX/Linux-style user-interfaces.

Technical support:

Use of remote administration applications Dameware, Citrix Metaframe, GoToAssist Express (beta tester), GoToMeeting, PC Anywhere, UltraVNC, and VPN portals to solve widely-varied PC issues.

Office software:

Extensive user-experience with MS-Office 2003/2007/2010 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Open Office 3.x/4.x, Google Apps office applications, Wrike Project Management.

INDUSTRIAL/CORPORATE EXPOSURE:

Due to my experiences in manufacturing, I have worked with a wide variety of companies. This includes working closely with the I.T. side of these companies to implement/support their manufacturing software and database interfaces with their ordering/MRP/ERP systems. Priority focus is on making sure the code to drive the NC machines meets with engineering/manufacturing approval.
