RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE

Senior Engineer, Becton Dickinson, Franklin lakes, NJ, 2006 - 2015

Lead Design Engineer/Project Lead

. Led design for several key projects:

o Safety Needle: design lead in all phases from concept to V&V of

innovative safety device for long needles. Designed new spinal

needle device which comprised a novel safety mechanism and an

ergonomic user interface preferred in user studies to all competition

and concepts from ID firm

o Low Cost Syringe: led concept phase design for device and development

phase of key subsystem for a cost and performance optimized device

designed for emerging markets, leading to over a billion units sold

o Syringe Stopper: led team for design optimization of syringe stoppers

resulting in improved performance and millions of dollars of

projected savings

o Infusion devices: led concept, development, and launch of multiple

hazardous drug infusion products

. Awarded five patents, with additional six patent applications pending

. Drove development of products from VOC and requirements management to

concept generation, prototype fabrication, functional and aesthetic

design, development, testing and validation, and manufacturing

o Designed new medical devices utilizing high volume, low cost,

precision plastic injection molded components and precision metal

stampings

o Adopted a user-centered approach - directed and focused design

activity to begin with and continue to emphasize direct and intimate

understanding of the user and applications in all phases

o Directed computational analysts to create and run accurate and

predictive FEA models - simulations designed to accurately model only

relevant physical phenomena that would influence product design

o Utilized analytical and computational tools to optimize material cost

verses functional performance

o Selected CTQs for device, performed tolerance analysis, and

incorporated features into design to allow for manufacture and

assembly

. Ensured robust functional performance by utilizing analytical (FEA,

first principles models, free body analysis, kinematics, Monte Carlo,

tolerance analysis, etc.) and empirical methods (DOE's, MSA's,

engineering studies)

. Responsible for prototyping of devices throughout concept and

development cycle, including managing vendors, scheduling, and mold

design approvals

. Designed, managed, and executed engineering studies, DOE's, design

verification

o Created and validated unique test methods and fixtures, transferred

methods to manufacturing plants

o Scheduled and balanced testing work orders to maintain timelines, and

supervised and trained technicians Created custom instrumented and

automated test beds (servos, pneumatics, load cells, PLC controls,

data acquisition) to evaluate functionality with on and off-label

usage of device

. Worked with cross functional teams to generate product requirements and

specifications, plan and execute market research studies to gather

design inputs and define and validate product performance

. Engaged with manufacturing teams to incorporate DFM and DFA principles

to ensure optimized moldability, fabrication, and assembly of components

Hypodermic New Product Innovation Team:

. Contributed to strategic innovation team, evaluating unmet needs,

requirements management, VOC, concept generation and feasibility,

financial modeling, and creating business plan proposals

. Led large brainstorming events, leading to concept generation, down

selection, and multiple patents
