M.Tech Project Work:

Project Name: Drag force reduction in Co-Current Up flow in Packed bed reactor

3rd and 4thSem

Semester:

ABSTRACT:

Drag reduction is one of the most important techniques for reducing energy

consumption in a packed bed contactor. The project work involved experimental

investigation on flow regime transition for air-water system with and without drag

reducing agent (DRA), two-phase pressure drop, friction factor and drag reduction

using Polyacrylamide (PAA) as DRA. The hydrodynamic properties of co-current

gas-liquid flow over a regularly packed at different flow conditions was studied and

mathematical model was developed.

B E Project Work:

Project Name: Process simulation and design of methanol plant

Semester: 8th

Simulation software: ASPEN HYSYS 2006.5,

ABSTRACT:

Methanol is an important petrochemical which has wide applications. With

world demand for methanol projected to grow at an average annual rate of 7.8%, the

future for the methanol industry is indeed bright. The recent Low Pressure ICI Process

has reduced the cost of manufacturing methanol considerably.

The aim of the project was to design a methanol plant of 0.5 MMTPA (Million

Metric Tons per annum) capacity based on the Low Pressure ICI Technology. The

methanol product quality is expected to conform to the specification-grade standard

(>99.85% by wt.).

Mini Project Work:

Project Name: STUDIES ON SIMULATION RELIABILITY IN HYSYS

Semester: 6th

Simulation software: ASPEN HYSYS 2006.5

CONCLUSION:

The simulation studies on HYSYS have revealed some interesting results. The same are

given below:

• Before attempting any Simulation Software, the user should be well-versed with

chemical engineering concepts. Without a strong background, software packages do

not serve any purpose. An experienced Chemical Engineer will be able to interpret

results and be aware of pitfalls that such a package has to offer.

• Blindly publishing simulation results could be dangerous – many a time simulated

results do not tally with actual experiments as shown in the Report. This could be due

to inefficient usage of the software package.

• The best appropriate Thermodynamic Fluid Package should be used. Various thumb

rules are available for this purpose. HYSYS also has an in-built Help function for this

purpose.
