Work History

Empire Cinema May 2012 – Ongoing

Working for Empire cinemas has taught me how to become an outstanding team member with

a great ability to pay attention to detail. My main tasks include cleaning and maintaining

cleanliness in the cinema while working under a tight timescale. I also have extensive

experience in dealing with the public through my role.

Topdogg Catering May – November 2011

Here I gained valuable retail skills as well as learning how to handle and prepare food. I was

responsible for providing a good reliable service to our customers as well as cashing up the till

and cleaning. I was trusted to open and lock up. Here I learned how to use initiative while

dealing with difficult customers.

Celtic Football Club October 2010 – June 2012

While working here my duties have included till work, selling and preparing food, keeping my

work space clean and delivering a responsible and friendly service for our customers at a fast-

paced level. Because Celtic park is so busy I was always on my feet and serving at the till,

cleaning or preparing the kiosk for half-time; this is where I learned to maintain a high level of

energy from the beginning of the working day until the end.

Voice Against Violence, University of Edinburgh Nov 2009 - Ongoing

Expert Advisor to the Scottish Government and local authorities

I have been a member of Voice Against Violence since November 2009. VAV is a group of

eight young people who provide expert advice to the Scottish Government, Ministers and local

authority politicians about improving services for children affected by domestic abuse. Due to

the success of this project all eight of us were individually awarded the Youth Scot Diversity &

Citizenship Award in 2011 and a Philip Lawrence Award in March 2012. As part of Voice

Against Violence, my role is to:

Evaluate the effectiveness of services available to children across Scotland – I visit agencies,

interview senior managers, do consultations with other young people and read government

plans and research.

Present recommendations to decision makers – together with other members of Voice Against

Violence I attend regular meetings with Government officials, Ministers, members of CoSLA

(Convention of Scottish Local Authorities) and heads of services.

Undertake workshops and research projects with children and young people, including a

national online survey which had over 600 young respondents

Develop and promote training and awareness-raising resources for young people and adults

including an online advertising campaign and a short film

Organise and present at large-scale events with hundreds of attendants

As part of my role with Voice Against Violence, I have also attended training on presentation

skills, listening skills, debating skills and research skills.

Our rights our lives conference, Edinburgh June - Sept 2010

Member of the conference planning committee

Alongside eleven other young people I was part of a planning committee to organise a

conference for 100 children and young people on the themes of Children’s Rights and

domestic abuse. The conference was coordinated by a partnership of organisations including

Scottish Women’s Aid, Barnardos and Young Scot. My responsibilities included:

• Planning every aspect of the conference based on a set budget – I decided the themes

of the conference, designed the logo and marketing materials and chose the

workshops and catering arrangements.

• Organising the conference programme – once we decided the themes and workshops I

advised on the structure and programme of the day.

• Contributing to the smooth running of the conference – I welcomed guests, gave them

information and helped out with various activities on the day.

The conference which was held at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena on the 25th of

September was a huge success. It gave me the opportunity to complete a Silver Level Youth

Achievement Award.

A project such as this helped me gain useful skills like making me more sociable; there was

such a diverse range of people and organisations at the conference, I learned a lot about

different backgrounds and cultures through my work with Our rights Our lives.

Loch Lomond birds of prey centre, Balloch June 2009

Welfare assistant

This was a one-week placement as part of my school work experience. I learned a great deal

about birds of prey and their care. I also learned a lot in terms of people skills and providing a

good professional service to visitors.

Additional Information

I hold a full clean drivers licence

Interests & Hobbies

I have fun doing drama and art and would consider myself both creative and academic. My

passion is for television and film which is the industry I would like to be employed in after

leaving school. I love animals and enjoy outdoor activities. I enjoy keeping fit and regularly go

running. Playing guitar and reading are also activities I enjoy in my spare time.

Awards

I won a Young Scot award in 2011 for my work at Voice against Violence. The group co-

designed the national Domestic abuse ad for 2011. As creative director I took a lead role in this

and gained valuable experience in using creative ideas visually, overseeing the campaign from

beginning to end and working with different agencies to get the best possible outcome.

In 2012 Voice against Violence was awarded with the prestigious Philip Lawrence Award – the

only Scottish winners of this year. We were recognised for the online survey we launched last

year and for “One Voice at a time” which is the film we created to raise awareness of domestic

abuse. Again I was project lead for our film. I gained a lot of knowledge in film making, editing,

interview skills and launching the film.

More recently I joined a group of young people running an online campaign which aims to

expose the reality of the porn industry. We are called The Porcupine Campaign. Our goal is to

make other young people aware of what the porn industry is actually doing to its performers

and the people who watch it. We believe that young people should be well informed of what’s

going on in the background to enable them to make their own decisions about porn. While

working with The Porcupines I have developed useful skills such as:

• Learning campaign skills and how to get publicity for our cause.

• Gaining a valuable insight to the porn industry and how young people are affected by

it.

• Learning how to create visuals online as an inventive method of getting our messages

out there.

• Developing knowledge about how to keep a campaign fresh and interesting.

• Holding regular Skype meetings and working well as a team.
