Currently I am an animal sciences senior at Purdue University looking to start a career in the

horse industry. I have always had a passion for horses and I am constantly looking for new experiences to

improve my skills. Through my YMCA camp experiences, I have gained a stronger passion for helping

others. My dream would be to combine my passions for horses and helping people in life for a fulfilling

career.

I have ridden horses for the majority of my life and have worked with ground training foals

through two year olds, (thoroughbreds to draft). While at Tecumseh, I have assessed the newly donated

horses’ ability for lessons and trails; not only considering ability to ride, but ability to listen to children’s

directions without being nervous. I also worked with the problem horses in attempting some corrections

to become more suitable for the program. I was also one of the first instructors to try the new horses in

my arena for lessons. At Camp Crosley I was in charge of the riding program entirely; I had a week to

assess the leased horses’ riding ability for the program, and plan the lessons accordingly. I continued

working with the difficult horses to make them better for the program. While at Baldwin farms, I worked

with untrained thoroughbreds ranging in age from four years and older. The main concern was focusing

on ground control and manners. Since most of the horses had not been touched in years, they would fight

the farrier and veterinarian. I helped to rehabilitate their behaviors in order for care and training to

continue optimally. I also had the opportunity to train draft horses to pull equipment and cooperate.

Through all of these experiences I have strengthened my knowledge of horse care and handling and

learned the need for a consistent schedule with horses.

While at Purdue: I have explored horse reproduction with draft horses by caring for the mares as

they progressed through their pregnancy and helping their foals strive to grow. I have also taken courses

in animal breeding and reproductive physiology; from these classes I took away not only the book

knowledge of pregnancy and partition, but some hands on experience in labs. I assisted and shadowed Dr.

Leiniger with reproductive exams and learned the record keeping methods. I have assisted in pregnancy

checks with hot race horses, foals by side, and even blind mares. I had the opportunity to travel the British

Isles touring thoroughbred farms and learning about other countries programs. From these experiences I

learned the importance of cleaning and organization in the barn especially for reproduction; I learned a

respect for multiple ideologies in the horse industry as well.

Within Camp Tecumseh and Camp Crosley’s programs, I have learned how to teach others about

horse basics and riding, as well as managing a large number of horses. At both camps I have worked in

the barn leadership positions where interact with all types of people and horses. At Prophetstown and RX

Acres, I interacted with the public during clinics and on daily chores to explain the daily care and training

of the animals; I helped to teach people who had never been around horses and people who just needed to

solidify their skills. While at Purdue I have been a teaching assistant where I interact with students and

lead them through their assignments and discussions. All of these experiences helped me to strengthen my

leadership skills, public speaking skills, and patience to help me become and better-rounded person in the

business side while still learning more about horses.

I would appreciate the time to discuss the possibility for the position. I can be reached at any

time at my email acgz3g@r.postjobfree.com and evenings by my phone 765-***-****. Thank you for your

time and considerations. I hope to hear from you soon about possible opportunities.

Sincerely,

Olivia Cummings
