DefinityHealth St. Louis Park, MN 2000 – 2005

Senior Software Developer/Lead

Responsible for the development and management of business critical applications which meet the needs of a

health benefits company. These applications included:

Member online tools providing account, benefit and facility cost/quality information.

Online and batch processes to manage claims and benefit financial data.

Sponsor/Plan setup desktop application.

Internal online audit to evaluate employee’s performance.

My work with these applications included:

• Requirements Gathering. I further refined business requirements through direct

communication with the business or formally through User Story sessions. I created the proper

requirement and/or Use Case documents as needed.

• Design. I designed or was an integral part of team which designed the system,

application and/or data model. The specific project design often led to the design of

frameworks to be used across all applications such as persistence, file loading and financial

transactions. I produced the necessary documentation including activity, class and sequence

diagrams.

• Development. I developed critical functionality and business logic. This development led

to modification or creation of JSPs, servlets, data objects and POJOs. This development also

included the use of internal frameworks such as validation, command, MVC and batch along

with external frameworks such as Castor. I also refactored code to perform more effectively

though the introduction of multi-threading, the use of cached data, removal of unnecessary

database executions and tweaking sql statements.

• Quality Assurance. I strived to write code that is maintainable, extensible and meets

business requirements. I confirmed this through code reviews, paired programming along with

Junit tests at the unit, acceptance and performance levels. I participated in many workgroups

to set coding standards and define development process.

• Leadership. I facilitated open communication with the project team through pair programming,

daily project team meetings and close proximity of team members to promote ad hoc meetings. I

promoted development team education through organization of symposiums and weekly developer

meetings. I supported a development environment defined by a mixture of RUP and Extreme

Programming, taking most of the requirement sections from RUP (use cases, etc.) and the iterative,

testing-focused development principles from Extreme Programming.
