STEPAN, Northfield, Illinois
Manager, Environmental Health and Safety 2001-2003
Managed and delivered all aspects of a safety environmental
program for corporate headquarters and the research and
development facility, removing $100,000 in waste annually.
Held audit responsibilities for off site research labs
located in New Jersey and Georgia. Generated benchmarking
guidelines and accurate documentation/training curricula
for staff.
Safety and Waste Administrator 1999-2001
Directed and delivered all aspects of environmental,
health, and safety program for corporate headquarters.
This included the research and development laboratories.
Accomplishments 1999-2003
< OSCAR: Occupational Safety Climates Assessment Report
from the National Safety Council. This is a 100
question employee perception survey where employees
rate their level of comfort with safety at their site.
The site for which I was responsible had a 92%
satisfaction rate compared to the other six sites
surveyed where the next highest was 84%.
< Hazardous Waste Cost Reduction: Drove down costs for
management of hazardous waste through initial
reorganization of process and subsequent annual
decreases. Developed streamlined removal process, with
immediate cost reductions of 30-50%.
< Workers' Compensation: Managed workers' compensation
cases from first report to return-to-work; managed
costs through meticulous patient follow-up and case
management. Tracked patients personally and worked
with healthcare providers to bring them back to work.
This reduced cost by eliminating unnecessary care and
avoiding legal repercussions.
< EHS Conferencing: Participated in company global EHS
conferences to facilitate EHS idea generation across
facilities. Planned all aspects of conferences and
had review privileges on the agenda to ensure
appropriate breaks. Received high praise from
attendees.
< Hazardous Materials Inventory: Represented company at
networking events to gain valuable benchmarking data
and eliminate the costly research phase. Devised
scheme for inventory of chemicals utilizing only
available resources. While inventory would be
"snapshot" rather than "real time," it would be
representative of the true hazards present in the
facility. This met requirements for having information
on hazards to provide to emergency responders and did
not require implementation of a new system.
< Safety Training/Awareness Optimization: Changed
antiquated process for delivering health, safety, and
environmental training and ensured managers were always
in attendance, which was not the case previously.
Immediately engaged a trainer to upgrade annual
training sessions and deliver training that was both
necessary and interesting. Varied training year to
year to keep things lively and maintain good
attendance. The compliance rate for completing annual
safety training went up to over 91% from 50% and
managers were always in attendance.
< Safety Committee Management: Facilitated safety
committee, setting schedule for meetings. Using
facilitation skills, did not allow meetings to become
gripe sessions but would recognize an issue and form a
subgroup to address it. People knew that if they
brought an issue to the safety committee it would be
addressed in a timely manner and not fall into a black
hole.
< Orientation Program: Developed and delivered new hire
orientation for both office and technical staffs.
Brought each new employee up to speed on facility and
safety procedures. Created a detailed safety
orientation for all employees and an additional program
for laboratory employees, which included full facility
tour. Continuously received positive feedback from
both new hires and their managers on the program. The
facility tour was considered the best and people often
requested the tour when they had visitors to the site.
< Drug/Alcohol Testing: Designed a drug and alcohol
random and for-cause testing protocol. Developed
policies and procedures for a program and selected the
methods, medical reviewer officers, and diagnostic
center. Working with various vendors, drove cost for
implementation down from $100,000 annually to $40,000.
Benchmarking with other companies and looking at
cutting-edge devices for the testing of employees was
key in decreasing overall program cost and
administration.
< Evacuation Team: Took over management of evacuation
team and turned it into a valuable, highly skilled
operation. Rewrote procedures and wrote roles and
responsibilities. Held meetings following each drill
to see what went well and what needed to be improved.
Evacuation drills went smoother each time and the team
would be instrumental in the event of an actual
emergency.
HELENE CURTIS, Rolling Meadows, Illinois 1995-1999
Senior Environmental and Safety Scientist - Unilever Home and
Personal Care USA
Held responsibility for comprehensive safety and
environmental compliance program for research and
development facility of 300 people. Reported and
documented sales data on volatile organic compound
containing products.
Environmental and Safety Specialist 1992-1995
Developed safety program for research portion of
manufacturing site due to new OSHA regulations requiring
chemical hygiene officer and chemical hygiene plan.
Revitalized existing Safety Committee to meet the needs of
the growing research and development division.
Accomplishments, 1992-1999
< Chemical Hygiene Plan: Revised OSHA required chemical
hygiene plan, which had been produced by risk
management department to meet regulatory deadline.
Immediately revised and trained research community on
site-specific plan. The profit for the company lay in
fines not paid; had the company been inspected by OSHA
and if a written program was not being followed, it
could have experienced fines and penalties.
< Biodegradability Testing: Coordinated biodegradability
testing of finished consumer products and presented
information to chemists and marketing department.
Worked with outside lab that was certified to perform
the testing, calculated results, and disseminated
results on a timely basis. Developed a keen sense as
to what would pass and what would not. This reduced
unnecessary formulation time on the part of chemists
and they could use ingredients known to pass the test.
< Laboratory Centralization: When laboratories were
relocated out of manufacturing site, the issue arose of
how chemists would secure raw materials for their
formulations. Personally developed and implemented
centralized stockroom for new facility to make sure all
needed materials would be on-hand. The costs savings
for R&D were realized through chemical inventory
reductions in the labs. On the safety side,
centralizing the inventory of chemicals reduced
exposure to only those specifically trained people.
< Barcode Tracking System: Worked with multidisciplined
group (computer, tech services) to develop barcode
system for tracking and inventory management of
chemicals maintained and dispensed out of the
stockroom.
< Chemists were able to track lot numbers so that if a
formulation went bad they could get back to the
original source and discover the problem.
< The system enabled scanning of containers that were
to be removed as chemical waste and provided
information to waste hauling vendor.
< Able to conduct chemical audits and have good
inventory data, which was an OSHA compliance issue.
Setting up inventory system through centralized
stockroom ensured that the research facility was
knowledgeable of its hazards and quantity/location
of material stored on site.
< Waste Removal: Conducted detailed vendor assessment to
determine who would be waste vendor and drove down cost
of waste removal through competitive bidding. This
saved $50,000 per year for the research division as
they had not been using the most cost-effective vendor.
< Incident Reporting: In the absence of having a nurse
on site, ensured any injuries sustained by research
employees were reported quickly to maintain excellent
relationships with insurers. Worked with the nurse who
managed occupational health to make sure all proper
forms were available and that medical responders were
well aware of procedures.
< VOC Reporting: Handled government reporting of
volatile organic compound (VOC) containing consumer
products that the company manufactured. Created
spreadsheets that defined the different parameters as
they applied to each state or report. Interfaced with
sales and marketing to obtain sales data necessary to
calculate pounds of VOC emitted in a particular state.
Reports were always submitted on time and were never
put into question during regulatory review. The
company could have sustained heavy fines and even
lawsuits had the data not been submitted correctly.
< Safety Committee - Research: Facilitated safety
committee for research division. Held bi-monthly
meetings and addressed everything from safety shower
testing to ensuring that new hires were well versed in
safety policy and procedures. Supported role by taking
classes in interpersonal skills, diplomacy, project
management, and negotiations. Worked very hard at
developing relationships and helping others to do the
same.
< Chemical Spill Response Team: To handle possible
emergency situations, formed chemical spill response
team who would deal with hazardous material spills.
Recruited a diverse group of people from the labs,
brought in a skilled trainer, and developed protocol to
be used in the event of a spill.
