Duties and Responsibilities

General

• Accepts and rejects specimens passed in the clinical laboratory

• Answers queries about the different laboratory procedureS

• Collects specimens (phlebotomy, non-invasive swab cultures)

• Supervise Medical Technology interns and externs during their hospital rotation

• Release laboratory results

• Checks supplies and reagents

Hematology

• Perform Routine tests like CBC, APC

• Perform Coagulation studies – PTPA,aPTT(Manual and Automated),Clotting Time,

Clot Retraction time, Bleeding time

• Stains blood smears and Performs Differential count

• Stains blood smears for malarial smear

• Prepares specimens for Erythrocyte Sedimentation rate

• Prepares slides for LE Preparations

• Performs QC and Calibrations of machines in hematology section

o Machines operated: UniCel DxH 800, COULTER AcT diff Analyzer, ACL

9000 for coagulation studies.

Clinical Chemistry

• Performs routine tests like FBS, Lipid Profile, NPN, Enzymes, Electrolytes

• Performs Urine Electrolytes

• Performs 24 hour urine tests: Urine Protein, Urine Creatinine

• Performs CSF and Other Body fluids chemistries (LDH, Glucose, Protein)

• Perform special chemistry tests like: HbA1C, Troponin T Quantitative

• Performs QC and Calibrations of machines in clinical chemistry

• Machines operated: DxC600 Unicel Chemistry analyzer, ABX Pentra 400

Chemistry analyzer, Integra 400 Chemistry analyzer, ISE Biolyte,

Spectrophotometers.

Clinical Microscopy and Parasitology

• Performs analyses for routine urinalysis and fecalysis

• Performs special urine tests like Urine RBC morphology, Urine Ketones

• Performs stone analysis

• Performs special fecal tests like Formalin ether concentration techniques,

Fecal occult blood

• Identifies parasites found in the feces

• Performs Cell counts and differential on other body fluids (transudates,

exudates, CSF)

• Performs Semenalysis

Machines operated: IRIS, Clinitek urine chemistry analyzer

Microbiology

• Performs and reads different staining tests(Gram stains, AFB stains, India

Ink)

• Performs and reads KOH and Wet mounts

• Prepare, autoclave and store culture media

• Collects microbiology specimens via non-invasive techniques

(swabs,scrapings)

• Collects specimens for blood culture

• Perform culture and sensitivity on microbial specimens

• Monitors machines for positive cultures

Machines operated: BacTek, Autoclave, Biosafety cabinet

Serology

• Performs Hepatitis profile (HbsAg, Anti-HBs, Anti-HAV, HbeAg)

• Performs other infectious disease serological tests (RPR, Hepatitis, Rubella,

Typhi-Dot)

• Performs tumor marker tests (Beta-HCG, AFP, CEA)

• Maintains, QC and calibrates machines used in serology section

Machines operated: Elecsys, Microtiter Photometers, Washers

Blood bank

• Perform phlebotomy on donors

• Performs initial screening of donors

• Performs blood typing and crossmatching

• Contacts other institutions for available blood/blood products
