Parametric Study of different Country Codes for Light Gauge Flexural Members (Master’s Thesis)

Different countries use different design methods for light gauge cold formed steel structures. India uses IS-

801which is based on allowable/ working s tress Method of design. The Aim is to compare the different design codes.

The main objectives of the study are:

To conduct a comparative study of light gauge steel sections using different country codes for different sections .

To undertake a detailed parametric study of light gauge steel sections by different codes.

In this dissertation, work on parametric study and comparison of flexural design strength of cold -formed light gauge

steel sections was carried out.

Comparison was done on IS:801-1975 code (Indian Standard) which is working stress method& BS 5950-5:1998

(British Standard) code which is a limit state design.

Comparison results for both laterally supported and unsupported flexural members were presented.

Results:

Laterally supported beams

a) The Curves were reverse parabolic in nature and the flexural loads worked out IS code (IS:801 -1975)

are higher than BS code (BS 5950-5:1998) values for all sections and span of beams .

b) The differences is very small when we compare IS load value & BS load values .

c) For wide flange sections the difference is more between IS load values and BS load values.

Laterally unsupported beams

a) The curves were reverse parabolic in nature and the flexural loads worked out IS code (IS:801 -1975)

are higher than BS code (BS 5950-5:1998) values for long spans. For short spans this is reverse.

b) For wide flange beams IS values are more than BS values expect at very long spans.

An Experimental Investigation on Fly ash as Sand Replacement Material in Concrete under Flexural

Strength(B.E. Project)

It was observed that the flexural strength goes on increasing up to 30% replacement of natural sand by fly

ash and there after decreases.

The maximum flexural strength can be obtained by replacing 30% of sand by fly ash .

It is also observed that the flexural strength of all mixes continue to increase with increase in the age .

As the percentage replacement of fly ash will increase there is a decrease in the slump.
