PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

MOTOROLA SOLUTIONS, Schaumburg, IL

SENIOR RF ENGINEER 2000 - PRESENT

- Designed high performance VHF band shift VCO for Motorola Solutions MTR3000 infrastructure radio on time and per specifications, creating ADS model that simulated frequency, phase noise, and power out accurately and implemented test suite in LabVIEW automating certification process.

- Modified layout of 16 layer transceiver board touching all exciter subcircuits, improving RF and digital isolation, limiting self-quieters, and optimizing part placement for best RF performance through use of Mentor tool suite, including Board Architect and Board Station with reuse blocks.

- Designed Sallen-Key 6-pole baseband antialiasing filter block for exciter, providing 68 dB of rejection of first alias product with only 0.2 dB inband ripple and tuned Cartesian feedback loop for low adjacent channel coupled power.

- Designed and documented comprehensive suite of small signal RF tests and test executive in LabVIEW in team setting, producing fault tolerant test software, enabling multiple DUT testing.

- Ensured that more than $3M in backordered shipments were fulfilled by contributing to troubleshooting effort during factory stop ship on base radio, arriving at root cause and effective solution for digital timing issue.

- Improved factory yields from 93.8% to 98.9% by devising algorithm increasing power accuracy calibration for power amplifier.

- Designed software altering non-volatile memory of base-station radio, resolving field issue for large Australian customer, saving expense of shipping numerous units back to North American factory, and contributing to customer satisfaction through development and testing of patch with stakeholder groups.

- Responded to urgent customer feature request and, in cooperation with embedded software team, wrote LabVIEW software, measuring output voltage in 13 hour increments and Python program analyzing 650 MB of generated data for signal integrity, meeting customer requirements.

- Reproduced elusive intermittent product issue pertaining to base station channel control tones, enabling embedded software group debugging and capturing of root cause of defect and collaborated with software group verifying solution.

- Reduced report preparation time from over 1 staff-week to 1 - 2 hours of large data sets typical of power amplifier testing, by designing software using Python with PyLab generating standardized charts used by team engineers in formal technical reviews.

- Certified UHF MTR3000 PA, uncovering issues with amplifier and voltage regulator stability, allowing team resolution of issues and meeting aggressive ship dates.

- Designed large signal low pass filter and power detection module in microstrip working in 850-941 MHz range, leading to Motorola pursuing and obtaining patent.

RF ENGINEER 1996 - 2000

- Upbanded iDEN 900 Quad Receiver Board from 800 MHz to 900 MHz modifying front end amplifier, image rejection filter, and intermediate frequency subcircuits of receiver, working at higher frequency range and performing all receiver certification testing.

- Designed balanced low noise amplifiers featuring 4-way and a 6-way Wilkinson splitters and switchable attenuation path.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

- CIRCUITS DESIGNED: Band shift VCOs and Buffer Amplifiers, Low-noise Amplifiers, Baseband Active Filters, RF Filters, Wilkinson Splitters, and Microstrip Directional Couplers and Filters

- SIMULATION TOOLS: Strong circuit simulation skills utilizing Analog Design System (ADS) and Momentum, Proficient with LTSpice for baseband analog circuit design

- TEST EQUIPMENT: Network Analyzers, Signal Analyzers, Power Meters, Noise Figure Meters, Oscilloscopes, Signal Generators, Function Generators, Loads and Attenuators, Switches, and Modulation Analyzers

- OTHER: Cadence and Mentor schematic Capture and layout, LabVIEW, Python, MS Excel / Word

PATENTS & PUBLICATIONS

- PATENT: Boulet, S. 2009. A microstrip coupler for optimizing directivity by improving alignment of even and odd mode phase components, US Patent 7532088 B2

- PUBLICATION: Genetic Algorithm for Evolving an RF Circuit, Motorola Simulation and Modeling Symposium, 2005

EDUCATION

- BS, Electrical Engineering, University of Wisconsin, 1995 - Madison, Madison, WI

- Fluent in French and conversant in German
