Clinical Research Projects

Dental Office Lighting

Evaluated different designs in overhead lighting fixtures available for use

in dental office construction. Determined that a "High Visual Performance"

fixture was superior to the standard "tropher" designs in the control of

brilliance and glare levels. The uses of "High Visual Performance" fixtures

were shown to lower the number of foot-candles necessary for normal ambient

overhead light at the head of the patient. Also, a lesser number of

florescent bulbs per operatory were needed for normal ambient light in

standard -sized 11 ft. x 11 ft. operatories.

Color Matching and Metamerism

Experimented with various available colored fluorescent bulbs that most

nearly mimicked natural light and minimized metameric color shift when

compared to natural light. Determination was that fluorescent bulbs rated

at 5500 Kelvin degrees and had CRI ratings of 90 or higher.

Color and Ceramics

Utilized a colorimeter to make readings of natural teeth before preparation

and fabrication of metal/ceramic crown restorations. Consulted charts of

available red, green and blue tri-stimulus values to assist in the addition

of porcelain colorants. In this manner, an increase or decrease in value

and chroma levels of body porcelains could be achieved.

Also, fabricated numerous custom shades to improve the color selection

process. What had been learned with the use of the colorimeter made it

easier to produce closer color matches to a patient's adjoining tooth.

Metallurgy

Comparison was made with three metal/ceramic casting alloys. The 52% gold

38% palladium, 0.5% platinum alloy produce more consistent acceptable

casting fits. This testing was performed in an in-house dental office

laboratory environment with an electric melt casting machine versus the

torch melted version.

Also, under microscopic examination, lower turbulence levels were found in

cross-sectional analysis of join connections when hollow pontic designs

were compared to solid pontic designs. In addition, lower turbulence levels

were found when sections were less than 5 sq. mm. in cross sectional area.

Acrylic Resins

Compared cold-cured acrylic resins with that of light-cured types, in 5

provisional bridge spans. Conventional cold-cured acrylic resin bridges

proved to be stronger to twisting forces with hand wrench.

Clinical implications indicated that light-cured cold-cured resins should

not be used in long span provisional bridgework, in patients who generated

high occlusal forces, or in cases where the provisional bridge would be

installed for periods longer than one month.
