Statement of Qualifications

Seasoned microbiologist with over 11 years of experience in bacteriology, virology, mycology, and microscopy

• Able microbiology laboratory (lab) manager

• Adept writer of pertinent protocols

• Experienced microscopist using the microscope for applications in bacteriology and mycology

• Strong team player and manager/trainer of colleagues

Professional Experience

Microbiologist

Smiths Detection - Boston, MA 2006 to 2011

• Supplied microbial and toxin bioweapon simulants used in development of the Smiths Detection Smart BioSensor (SBS)

project. The supplied simulants were disseminated into test chambers to analyze SBS functionality. Researched and

developed microbiological methodologies in support of the project.

o Bacillus anthracis simulant: Bacillus globigii

Harvested B. globigii endospores (spores)

Implemented malachite green stains in concert with bright field microscopy

Analyzed spore harvests using acridine orange (AO) fluorescent microscopy

Processed the harvested spores chemically using centrifugation

Enumerated spore harvests using triplicate direct counts on 2 µm filters

Maintained a 4 C stock of enumerated spores

o Smallpox simulant: MS2 bacteriophage (phage)

Propagated MS2 phage (ATCC Number 15597-B1) by infecting host Escherichia coli (E. coli ATCC

15597) with MS2, and collected the infection’s supernatant

Performed plaque assays using the MS2 propagation supernatant to enumerate MS2 concentrations

Labeled the supernatant concentrations and stored the stock at 4 C

o Toxin simulant: Ovalbumin

Prepared solutions of various concentrations

• Operated a 1,100 L aerosol test chamber.

o Performed experiments to determine the effectiveness of SBS systems

Disseminated biosimulants into a 1,100 L aerosol test chamber with nebulizers

Collected dissemination data with appropriate software for analysis

Transferred dissemination data from the chamber computer to a file server

Performed post-test chamber decontaminations

• Wrote SOPs.

o Bacterial Cell Suspensions

o Preparation of Bacillus globigii (Bg) Glycerol Stock

o Bacillus globigii (Bg) Endospore (Spore) Harvest

o Malachite Green Differential Stain for Endospores

o Preparation of ATCC #271: Escherichia Medium (1L)

o MS2 Bacteriophage (Phage) Propagation

o MS2 Bacteriophage (Phage) Plaque Assay

o 1,100 L Aerosol Chamber Testing of Smart BioSensor (SBS) Units for Sensor Lifetime Study

• Managed the microbiology lab.

o Moved to a new location and set up the microbiology lab from the ground up

o Purchased microbiology lab equipment and other necessities on an ongoing basis

o Implemented annual microbiology lab maintenance

Certified Class II biosafety cabinets

Oversaw Pipette calibrations

Initiated microscope maintenance

o Trained corporate colleagues in rudimentary microbiological techniques

Microbiologist

Verax Biomedical, Inc. - Worcester, MA 2003 to 2003

• Microbiologically supported a project for the development of a rapid assay to simultaneously detect possible

gram negative and gram positive bacterial contamination in worldwide blood bank platelet units. The double-

lateral-flow assay consisted of a nitrocellulose platform on which two colloidal-gold-antibody formulations

were deposited against antigens intrinsic to each of the two gram-stain types of bacteria: LPS antibodies to

detect gram negative bacteria, and protein A antibodies to detect gram positive bacteria.

Microscopist

Aerotech Laboratories, Inc. - Phoenix, AZ 2000 to 2002

• Prepared environmental (Indoor Air Quality [IAQ]) slides acquired from swabs and tapes.

• Microscopically evaluated slides for presence and type of fungal spores relevant to the IAQ industry.

• Researched and presented fungi information to colleagues.

Lead Food Science Technician

Miller Laboratories - Phoenix, AZ 1996 to 2000

• Microbiology: Performed USDA, USP, BAM, and AOAC procedures to detect foodborne pathogens…

• Biochemistry: Detected bacterial genera and species using ELISA and other ID methods…

• Chemistry: Prepared and evaluated samples for ash, protein, free fatty acids, peroxide, fiber, protein…

• Autoclave: Prepared microbiological media, sterilized tools and glassware, and disposed of biowaste…

• General: Reviewed sample data, interfaced with clients, completed lab inventories, ordered needed products,

prepared chemistry solutions, consulted with lab manager to better implement procedures, wrote SOPs…

• Management: Trained and managed lab technicians…

Education

B.S. Microbiology

University of Massachusetts - Amherst, MA 2003 to 2006

• Graduated Cum Laude

• Dean's list

• Member of American Society for Microbiology (ASM)

• Advanced microbiological research at UMass:

o Researched the intracellular pathogenic bacterium Chlamydia in a lab developing a vaccine against it.

o Cultured mammalian cells (J774A.1, HEp-2).

o Infected mammalian cell cultures with chlamydial elementary bodies (EB).

o Harvested EB supernatants from centrifuged infection lysates.

o Implemented Qiagen kits to extract and purify chlamydial DNA.

o Used omp1 primers to amplify the opm1 gene with PCR.

o Ran electrophoresis gels as proof of concept.

B.S. Nutrition

Arizona State University - Tempe, AZ 1993 to 1996
