Correctional Officer (Senior Officer)

Duties, Accomplishments and Related Skills:

My duties as a Senior Officer during the activation of FCI Mendota included but are not limited to the following:

I participated and assisted in training and mock drills exercise pertaining to the Bureau of Prisons policies and procedures. As a Senior Officer I regularly train and guide less experienced staff on Bureau policies and procedures. This training includes teaching new and senior staff basic and advanced correctional techniques according to Bureau of Prisons policy such as (pat searches, cell searches, Sentry Codes/procedures, identifying inmate tension, restraining/handcuffing inmates, video monitoring, mail monitoring, clearing/handling duty weapons safely, equipment and key inventory, all critical post duties). I teach new staff to become independent by always showing them how to locate national and local Bureau policies within the Sallyport intranet system. I am often sought by Senior Officer Specialists, who look to me for assistance in ascertaining the skills necessary to achieve higher standards of performance in their assigned critical post. I assisted with the activation of the Control Center and Tool Room. I perform regular inspections of all equipment assigned to my areas of responsibility daily.

As a Senior Officer, I have been assigned to at all Officer in Charge (OIC) posts including those of a critical nature requiring maximum skill and expertise necessary for dealing with both inmates and the public. Some of these posts have included Control Room Officer, Rear Gate Officer, Special Housing Unit Officer and Visiting Room Officer. I have been able to work all posts with little or no supervision and have received either Exceeds or Outstanding evaluations for performance of my duties.

As Control Room Officer I am in charge of assuring accurate counts of the institution. I perform various inmate changes with institution Sentry program. I maintain key control, equipment inspections and accountability daily. Inform all staff of any emergency and non emergency via radio and contact information. I control all institution movement.

As Rear Gate Officer I control incoming and outgoing movements on the outer perimeter. Daily tasks are to inspect all material, transport vehicles and equipment. I ensure that all visitors have correct documentation before they are given access to the institution. Operations Lieutenant and Control Room Officer is notified if there are additional required escorts.

As Special Housing Unit Officer in Charge (OIC) I conduct routine rounds to ensure the well being of the inmates housed there. I update data for cell rotations, meals, recreation and daily inmate activity. I screen inmate’s mail for possible forbidden communications or contraband. I ensure that these are completed safe and secure in the unit. As SHU OIC, one of my frequent accomplishments is to deescalate inmate incidents before they become disturbances that require the presence of supervisory and executive staff. Although these incidents may sometimes go unnoticed by supervisory staff, I take pride in knowing that I make a difference.

As Visiting Room Officer in Charge I observe and report any conflict or suspicious activity that pertains to inmate rules and regulations of their visit. I intercept any introduction of contraband by visitors and inmates.

While keeping a heightened sense of awareness, I maintain a safe environment for inmates to live, as well as work in, while simultaneously protecting society by supervising and maintaining custody of offenders. I enforce institution rules by explaining policy to staff and incarcerated inmates. I have intervened disruptive inmates with verbal orders and appropriate use of force. I directly supervise and guide inmates in areas such as; incident reports, memorandums, post order reviews, and intelligence reports. I utilize my superior communication skills to maintain control of large amounts of inmates from many different groups. I strive to establish and maintain a good rapport with the entire inmate population so I can collect information and gather intelligence. This allows me to maintain the ability to identify signs distress and discord amongst the inmate population.

As a Senior Officer I have responded to various emergencies within the institution using calm and clear communication through the institution's radio system and telephone. Specifically, I announced to staff what type of emergency existed and directed staff as necessary to where their assistance was needed. In this process I have used the contingency plans to respond step by step to institutional emergencies both in live situations and during mock exercises.

I have used verbal communication in the control of inmates while I was working the Special Housing Unit. There was an inmate that was refusing to submit to hand restraints. The inmate was verbally abusive and not responding to staff. I approached his cell and was able to convince him to submit to restraints.
