Department of Biological Sciences
Aug 2012 - May 2013
Western Michigan University
Laboratory Assistant
. Preparation of reagents, media, and controls, as well as conducting
appropriate and corresponding experiments. These included components
and procedures associated with DNA archiving, DNA genotyping, plant
and seed harvesting, enzyme extraction, polyacrylamide gel
electrophoresis, chlorophyll fluorescence, and map-based cloning.
. Research on thylakoid zinc-finger proteins involved in photosynthetic
apparatus repair.
. Grant proposal writing and reviewing.
Seeking new position June

Lyman Briggs College of Science
Aug 2009 - May 2011
Michigan State University
Teaching & Laboratory Assistant
. Served as a teaching assistant in two separate sections of LB145
(Cellular & Molecular Biology) for a total of four semesters at Michigan
State University, with freshman and sophomore students. I was principally
responsible, alongside another Graduate and/or Teaching Assistant, for
overseeing a laboratory section of the course. This included grading,
proctoring exams, meeting with students after hours to review material,
maintaining records, & supervising experiments. Responsible for attending
and assisting with the professor's lectures and the graduate students'
recitation sections.
. Assisted in preparation of reagents, media, and controls, along with
their testing with corresponding techniques, prior to use in academic
learning laboratories. These included components and procedures
associated with DNA & Protein Extraction, Mass Spectrometry, Bradford
Assays, Bacterial Cultures (LB and Antibiotic Agars), Gram Staining,
Vector Insertion (including the preparation of competent E. coli cells),
Polymerase Chain Reaction, Restriction Digest, Site-Directed Mutagenesis,
Gel Electrophoresis, and U.V. Spec.
. Implemented the use of Lithium Borate as a buffer in Gel Electrophoresis
within the Lyman Briggs Biology Laboratories.
Cystic Fibrosis Research in the Department of Physiology
Jan 2009 - May 2011
Michigan State University
Undergraduate Researcher
. Participated in the design and development of a genetic screening assay
utilizing multiplex PCR for the diagnosis of 18 SNP mutations in the CFTR
gene that are prominent within the Mexican population.
. In an effort to maximize stringency and eliminate false-positives, we
introduced a novel Pyrimidine mismatch three nucleotides in from the 3'
end of the oligonucleotide primers and also customized the 10X PCR
reaction buffers for specific sets of primers.
. Site-directed mutagenesis was utilized to provide mutant DNA for testing
purposes.
. In a parallel project to increase the processivity of the thermostable
polymerase used in the multiplex, we constructed a novel method to
chelate divalent cations to one half of the polymerase active sites. This
reduced competition for these ions by other components in the reaction
cocktail and increased the concentration of DNA replicated from PCR.
