Safety Manager, Turner Construction Company

December 2003 – March 2008

(1) The N.C. Research Campus, Kannapolis, N.C.

The N.C. Research Campus is a 350-acre campus which will house the most state-of-the-art laboratory

space in the nation and is expected to become the home to over 100 biotechnology companies. The

University of North Carolina, North Carolina State University and Duke University are among several of

the universities that will operate research facilities on this site. The campus will also feature a plaza with

retail shops, apartments, a multiplex movie theater and Dole Foods Organic Café. The buildings consist

of steel structure with concrete slabs-on-metal deck. The exterior skin includes a brick facade, cast stone,

FRP, punched windows, and a thermoplastic and standing seam metal roof system.

(2) The Newseum / Freedom Forum, Washington, D.C.

Construction volume $300 million; this 12-story structure was built on the last remaining open space on

Pennsylvania Avenue. Exterior glass curtain walls and interior stairways, exhibit floors and a master

control room hang from structural-steel trusses with shoring towers used to assist in the erection of the

trusses. The 650,000-sq-ft. building sits on a concrete, poured-in-place mat foundation and contains three

sub grade levels – two for parking and some storage and one with exhibit and public spaces. Included in

the complex are two broadcast studios, multiple theaters, and a 9000-sq.-ft. conference center, food court

and museum store. The rear of the museum also contains 134 residential units.

(3) U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Alexandria, VA

Developed on a 15-acre site the 4-million square ft. U.S. Patent and Trademark Office represents the

Mid-Atlantic region’s largest single project. The job entailed building four 10-story, poured-in-place

concrete office buildings; a signature office building with two poured-in-place concrete 10-story wings,

linked by a 12-story, structural-steel atrium with skylight glazing; two concrete parking garages with a

total of 3,500 spaces; and two townhouse-style, structural-steel office buildings that help conceal the

parking structures. Job volume $525 million, with 700 subcontractor employees at peak.

Responsibilities:

• Develop and implement site safety orientation for all employees, coordinate loss prevention

activities with all subcontractor safety representatives to assure overall alignment with project goals.

• Administer site safety auditing program (DBO2), to insure compliance with requirements of Turner

Construction Company as well as all applicable state, local, and federal agencies.

• Manage site medical and first aid cases. Gather information; provide reports and statistics that may

be needed to improve/support the implementation of industry best practices.

• Administer safety incentive programs as Chairperson of the site’s Safety Committee.

• Insure prompt and accurate investigations of incidents, develop and implement all site safety

training required.

Safety Supervisor, Fluor Daniel - Belews Creek, N.C.

January 2002 – November 2003

• Assisted in the development and implementation of the new hire orientation program and site safety

procedures.

• Lead person for Safety Plans/Work Packages, which addressed environmental & safety issues

relating to the safe erection and installation of two (2) Selective Catalytic Reducers (SCR) for Duke

Energy at their Belews Creek Steam Station site.

• Performed daily, as well as weekly documented safety audits to identify trends and leading

indicators.

• Responsible for accident investigations and identifying root causes to establish preventive methods.

• Administered the corporate substance abuse program for the site, which employed more than 1000

direct hires including sub-contractors.

• Provided first aid and injury management to reduce potential lost time, restricted work- day cases,

hazardous waste, Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Program, as well as the Storm Water

• As a part of the construction management team, accountable for coordinating and reporting of daily

and weekly field safety audits for sub-contractors and advising project management of deficiencies.
