this research was to analyze t h e changes in key balance sheet accounts of the four

main Portuguese banks (BES, BPA, BPSM and BTA), and the effects of the (re) privatization that

happened during the 1990s. For comparison reasons, the whole of the Portuguese banking

sector and the foreign banks operating in Portugal were also analyzed.
