Family Centered Care Coordinator
Cook Children's Medical Center - Fort Worth, TX
Responsibilities
I was fortunate to be the first person to hold this position and sat on the hospital steering committee that worked
to create the position. My duties include:
Coordinating, facilitating and developing a Family Advisory Council made up of 60% parent volunteer advisors
and 40% staff to collaborate and identify ways to improve the family experience at the hospital and clinics.
Creating tools and modules for educating the staff on the concepts of family-centered care (respect & dignity,
information sharing, participation, and collaboration) and how to implement that into their jobs and the way
they interact with our customers.
Creating educational tools for parents and families around family-centered care, how to collaborate with their
child’s healthcare team, how to advocate for their child, and what to expect when they are in the hospital.
Creating support programs and services designed to encourage, provide resources, and offer support options
to parents and families in the hospital/clinics.
Provide and represent family perspective to hospital administration around quality and safety initiatives and
nationally trending efforts and work on committees to develop programs customized for our hospital and help
roll them out hospital-wide.
Collaborate with children’s hospitals nationwide to identify new opportunities for growth and improvement at
Cook Children's and help develop those ideas into successful programing benefiting our staff and patients.
Accomplishments
In the five years I have worked at Cook, I am proud of the things I have been able to accomplish to improve the
safety and quality of the service we provide to our patients and families.
Created and developed a comprehensive Parents As Partners program to involve and collaborate with
parent advisors and volunteers and give families the ability to share their perspectives to improve the family
experience. (13 Family Advisory Councils, Family Ambassadors, Support Group Leads, Parent Liaisons,
Parent Panels, Board/Committee Advisor/Representatives) 286 parent volunteers
Created the P.A.C.T. card (2009) around improving the communication expectation between staff and parents.
Led a team of staff to create and develop (2011) our hospitals parent-initiated med alert program (F.A.S.T.)
and helped to develop Bedside Shift Report guidelines (2010) and Physician Shadowing (2013).
Created and developed one of the first hospital-sponsored parent mentoring programs in the country (2009).
Worked with Parent Advisors to create and develop:
* About Me boards for every inpatient room * Family Medical Planner (free to parents)
* “Don’t Forget” Pads: A tool designed for parents for upcoming clinical appointments
Presented webinar lecture to national audience Child Health Corporation of America (CHCA) in 2010 on my
Mentoring Program, and NRC Picker webinar in 2011 on my PAP Program.
Presented conference lecture to national audience, Society for Healthcare Consumer Advocacy (SHCA) in
Austin in 2012, and the Institute for Patient and Family Centered Care (IPFCC) in Washington, DC in 2012.
Hosted and coached a team that visited our hospital from St. Jude’s (2012) that wanted to learn about our
parent mentoring program and how to start one at St. Jude’s.
Representative for family engagement on our HAC (hospital acquired conditions) teams through the national
Ohio Collaborative or Solutions for Patient. Safety (SPS). I will be attending the national conference in June
2014 in Indianapolis to help present the family engagement learning session.
Submitted program reports to aid in accreditations for Joint Commission, Magnet, and Baldridge.
Beginning a research pilot and Evidence-based Study in May 2014 around family engagement to be published
nationally.
