Research Assistant

6/2002 – 10/2005

University of Basel

Basel, Switzerland

Conducted research to characterize the biochemical and functional role of a novel complement inhibitor, CRIT.

Cloned, confirmed and deposited the human and cod CRIT DNA sequences in gene bank.

Demonstrated the inhibitory mechanism of CRIT on complement activation.

Completed the screening and characterization of CRIT interaction partners with ligand-blot and ELISA.

• Expressed and purified recombinant C2/FB vWFA domains for the protein interaction studies with CRIT

peptides.

• Performed protein crystallization of recombinant vWFA domains or the complexes C2/FB vWFA with/without CRIT

peptides.

Research Assistant

9/1998 – 6/2001

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

Conducted research to isolate and characterize benzodiazepine receptor ligands from Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi.

• Prepared herbal extracts and performed high-throughput screening for lead compound.

• Performed molecular cloning, site-directed mutagenesis, fusion PCR and DNA sequencing.

• Developed a radio-receptor binding assay to screen and locate the active compounds/fractions and compute

IC50 of purified compounds.

• Purified active benzodiazepine receptor ligands from herbal extracts with preparative column (silica gel or LH-20).

• Conducted qualitative analysis of purified compounds by HPLC method.

• Finished several pre-clinical animal studies (elevated-plus maze, holeboard test, horizontial wire test) to determine

the effect dose, lethal dose and any associated side effect for the patent application and scientific publications.
