PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

LexisNexis (Reed Elsevier), New York / Dayton, OH / Winter Park 2012 – 2013

Chief Content Architect / Chief Data Scientist. Hand-picked by GTO Leadership as their Content

“Rock Star” and tasked to define and establish a vision for the future of Content / Content Systems

that would carry them beyond the next decade and restore LexisNexis to #1 in all markets by 2020.

• Personally conceived, created, developed and socialized Vision, Strategy and Reference Architecture

for Content, establishing game-changing, disruptive innovations around use of content and user

interactions that would result in better than state-of-the-art Content Systems through 2020. Enabling

innovations and core concepts heavily leveraged my prior inventions (see Gartner 2010 Cool Vendor

article, US Army NGENS™ work, and Information Architecture 2020©) and included:

o Scale-free Connectedness. Next-generation relationship strategy, the Insight Graph™ delivers

“tipping points” in real-time with “Big Data”-style MPP of multi-petabyte datasets / corpuses.

o Dual-purpose Content Learning based on Semantic Priming™,

Data Reveals Itself. Beyond Schema-on-Read, a path to dramatic reductions in (or

eventual elimination of) manual schema development. Easy integration of acquisitions

by semi-automated conversion of content – from weeks / months to near-same-day.

Content Exposes its Domain. Reading the content for Domain Awareness.

o Continuous, Cumulative Learning. Advanced Machine Learning techniques enable software

systems to become “better learners” over time,

o The NGENS™ SemKB, a special-purpose, in-memory, graph-enabled Semantic Knowledgebase

storing content as fractal-based, atomic elements, composed as CELs and fused to context as

Nuggets of domain-specific, actionable information yielding insight

o The Right Questions. While competitors seek “Answers”, instructed LexisNexis to expect the

“Death of Search” as we know it today. Developed user interactions for a rich immersive

proactive Content Experience and enabled future products to act on right questions,

o Latent Synergy Discovery by learning from content and user interaction with the content,

o A complex, adaptive, event-based, real-time, agent-based architecture

• Near-immediate Payback / ROI. An implementation plan leveraging funded projects was created

to deliver most of the innovations by 2015, with 1st projects saving $60-$100 million in 2013 alone.

• Self-Aware, Self-Organizing Content / Systems. Revolutionized and transformed Lexis’ current

approach to “Smart Content” with game-changing, disruptive innovations that replaced static,

“enriched” content with Context-Aware, Adaptive, Model-driven, Agent-based, Event-based atomic

units enabling real-time response to User Interaction with Content (Curators and Customers).

o Contextual Awareness / State-Awareness from state transition insight, context vectors, self-

modifying data structures, and exotic graph algorithms linking state to context in real-time

o Achieved Massively Parallel Machine Learning with MPP architecture and data in-state

o Complex Adaptive Models and Emergent Semantics, including an Emergent Ontology that

allows the seeding of domain information and the continued expansion of knowledge over time.

o Lexis Sherlock® to replace Lexis Advance® and reveal contextual insight in real-time

• Data Finds Data. Using graph traversal, pattern-based, first-order predicate logic, contextual-aware

scale-free content fractals with embedded real-time execution fragments use a seek, analyze, model,

adapt approach to reveal insight and meaning sufficient to locate related and / or connected data.

• Big Data Analytics. Identified gaps in data / content severely limiting Analytics. Introduced Big

Data Insight Platform that leveraged a native Graph DB and Map Reduce on HPCC to yield Insight,

Foresight and Optimization from Descriptive, Diagnostic, Predictive and Prescriptive Analytics

o Developed Prescriptive Analytics “sandbox” for prototyping scale-out Big Data appliances

Inventor and Architect of NGENS™. Using ENS as applied to Delta Nervous System (ca 1999),

and considering other options through early 2005 – it was clear they fell short. Applying years of

experience in EAI, and innovations in several new areas, in 2005, the Next-Generation ENS

(NGENS™) was conceived and proposed as solution to the OASIS integration problem for ATEC.

• U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command (ATEC). (9/05 – 3/08) Integrated 5 T&E M&S

systems (Janus, OT-TES, STORM, IMASE, ExCIS) in live test exercise. Led multi-organizational,

cross-function, cross-domain team to demonstrate NGENS™ fully integrate systems “as is”. Added

functionality not performed by any system. Reduced CPU load from 100% (stand-alone systems

failed MITRE tests) to < 2% utilization. Achieved “super linear” speed-up. Reduced network

traffic by 94%. Eliminated DIS and HLA traffic. NGENS™ became “scenario aware”, handling

distributed simulation and cross-domain integration. (Code base: 90% C / 10% C

• NGENS™ Noisy Semantics™. (11/05 – 5/07) Conceived, designed and developed first generation

solution that adapts to incomplete, “noisy”, or dynamic metadata. During domain analysis to

produce vocabulary, ontology and semantic knowledgebase, the nature of the data exposed a need for

a new approach – traditional semantics would fail miserably. Designed sophisticated scheme to

richly annotate triples. Leveraged scale-free networks, chaos, Latent Semantic Analysis, fragments

and fractals, context, behaviors and allowed Emergent Semantics (Complex Adaptive System) to

discover appropriate meaning at any point in time – automatically. (100% C code.)

• NGENS™ Real-time Data Collection & Adaptive Analytics. (2008) Development continued

after the Army prototype success. We took the comprehensive capabilities of Noisy Semantics™

and added Algebraic Semantics and a sophisticated graph traversal / node analysis function to
