Project Narrative: Collectively, the five separate research questions
addressed in this project add an intriguing dimension to the issue of
the "protectiveness" vs. "inhibitiveness" of whiteness or blackness to
healthy psychological functioning: i.e., the question of whether the
"self-directedness" of individuals' jobs is an important mechanism
through which such advantages / disadvantages come about. Analyses are
based on data from the National Survey of American Life (NSAL)
augmented by occupational self-direction data from the Dictionary of
Occupational Titles (DOT).
