SUMMARY:
Professional estimator- construction manager with years of service to public and
private users, developers and contractors. Past president of Design-Build;
former vice-president and chief estimator of minority general contracting firm
and past construction manager to both the State of Michigan and San Jose State
University.
Extensive experience in construction operations including: field layout, field
supervision, general field supervision, estimating, project management and
executive supervision. Strong experience in purchasing procedures, negotiation,
claim avoidance, the bid process, contract administration and project
remediation.
Areas of work include high rise, office-ground up and remodel, educational, medical,
shopping malls including free-standing major retail, airports and heavy
industrial.
Self employed since 2003 as Claim Consultant and Independent Estimator.
EDUCATION / CREDENTIALS:
B.S. Architecture; formal Civil Engineering, Economics and Finance study; past
chapter president, American Society of Professional Estimators; past chairman,
Educational and Professional Activities Board – Engineering Society of Detroit;
contributor to book length analysis of school construction, New Tactics for
Building; seminar lecturer to Michigan Contractors on The Bid Process (written
by Tony Ban); and past part-time professor, College of Engineering, Lawrence
University for Estimating, Conceptual Estimating and Project Management.
WORK HISTORY:
11/03 to present Independent estimator and claims consultant: Clients include
school districts, general contractors and subcontractors. Work requires
extensive entitlement evaluation, determination, estimating, reports and
negotiation. California Expert Witness service also provided. (Full time after
5/2007)
06/05 to 05/07 Contract Administrator, Stanford Linear Accelerator (SLAC):
Purchasing duties from inception through final payment including change-
orders, compliance with FARS, negotiation and settlement.
03/04 to 05/05 On-site senior estimator for Abide International, Construction Manager for
the GSA, on $140MM Fresno Courthouse. Change order review and
negotiation directly with prime contractors and their major subcontractors.
07/01 to 10/03 Barry Swenson Builders – Estimator, Superintendent and Project Manager
on self generated D/B bid jobs: Santa Clara Court House completed with
zero punch list from owner’s architect, and Redwood City Child Care
Facility requiring extreme cost containment.
10/99 to 06/01 Gordon-Prill – Estimator, Superintendent and Project Manager on self
generated jobs. (Projects included work at Lockheed, IBM and a private
law office in San Mateo.
01/97 to 09/99 Midwest Steel Erectors – estimator on steel erection projects in the Bay
area. General Project Manager, Portland Airport steel parking structure.
01/95 to 01/97 Asked to return to Michigan for largest D/B project done by Schoenshek
Construction Co: high tech laboratory and dynamometer facility to
consolidate six diverse groups from Ohio and Michigan into one facility.
Job was full responsibility including all client liaisons.
1992 to 01/95 Self employed Construction Manager and Budget estimator at San Jose
State University. Responsibility for all SJSU Capital projects done during
that tenure including three parking garage seismic retrofits: entire bid-
process management, award recommendations, direct field supervision,
contract administration, change order negotiations and close-out.
1990 to 1992 Relocated to California from Michigan with Walbridge-Aldinger Corp. to
serve as on-site change estimator on Nummi Paint Plant project in
Fremont. All liaison with owner’s estimator on $30MM in changes
bringing the $22MM project to $52MM. Decision made to remain in
California after close-out of D/B business in Michigan.
1983 to 1990 President, DMC Corporation in Detroit Michigan area. All sales,
estimating, and project management for this medium size D/B firm.
Clients included General Motors, General Dynamics, Chrysler
Corporation and a variety of private projects. Simultaneous management
of multiple projects the usual order of business.
1980 to 1983 Vice President, Gough Construction Co, Detroit Minority general
contractor. Responsibilities included chief estimator, manager of field
operations and accounts receivable, sales support and all interactions with
public planning and building departments.
Prior to 1980 Two years general manager of medium size speculative building company,
where responsibilities included site analysis, procurement, marketing and
leasing the units; senior estimator and project manager for national general
contractor; eight years with major general contractor as expeditor,
estimator, senior estimator, layout engineer, assistant superintendent,
superintendent and project manager; and one year with a civil consulting
engineer doing line and grade on road work.
