Career Summary: A senior level mechanical design engineer with over 20 years of engineering experience in
commercial, industrial, medical and consumer level products. Proven skills in leading
engineering teams and coordinating concept development with extended project partners
and customers. Familiar with machining, casting, plastics, sheetmetal & weldments as well
as a wide range of regulatory specifications.
Experience: Lead Mechanical Engineer – DEKA Research & Development (2010 – 2014)
• Led mechanical engineering team consisting of 4 – 9 people in the development of
medical and non-medical devices. Worked with project management to interview and build
the mechanical engineering team.
• Responsible for system top level mechanical architecture, modular design
concepts, overall system mechanical BOM and cost for device including over 800 different
components.
• Developed innovative and patentable solutions for complex design and operational
challenges related to various medical and non-medical applications. Created extensive P &
ID layouts for fluid-based systems. Specified and designed pumps, valves, compressors
and fans.
• Traveled to Ghana, Africa for 6 weeks to support field trial installation, maintenance
and training with local resources. During trips to Ghana, learned the local language “Twi”
and used it to coordinate local resources.
• Traveled to Dongguan, China for 10 weeks to support the manufacture of revised-
design prototypes. During trips to China, began to learn Mandarin to support role as lead
technical adviser during the prototype build.
• Provided design direction for stamped metal, machined metal, cast metal and
injection molded thermoplastics for production level manufacturing. Introduced structural
foam (RIM, LIM) and spray foam insulation as options for cost effective production
manufacturing.
• Consulted with engineering teams from large appliance manufacturers to develop
new concepts for cost reduction based on annual volumes.
• Performed and coordinated FEA simulations on mechanical components under
several force loads as well as GD & T analysis to assure proper performance and cost
effectiveness prior to releasing tooling.
• Responsible for the procurement and qualification of 65 injection mold tools and
over 50 assembly fixtures in overseas facilities.
• Researched and introduced innovative thermoplastics to meet customer
requirements, machine application requirements and cost effectiveness.
• Researched and implemented requirements from ASME, UL, CE, NSF-52, NSF-61
& NSF-62 as well as IEC-61010-1, REACH and WEEE for all mechanical components in the
system. Additionally researched requirements for IP-X3 & IP-54.
• Researched and implemented AAMI water quality standards and IEC60101-1
requirements for use with another water purifier application.
• Supervised and directed the work efforts of between 4 and 9 people (typically 6) to
design an innovative water purifier for extended field trials in Paraguay, Mexico and South
Africa as well as a consequential redesign based on the learnings from those field trials.
• Worked as the lead technical resource with development partner responsible for
training partner staff, explaining the technology and designs and working through partner
requirements.
Mechanical Engineer – ENCON Evaporators (2007 – 2010)
• Performed and managed technical reviews of all components for evaporation
systems as well as managed the required analysis of these various components.
• Performed engineering and design of energy efficient waste water evaporation
equipment using sound engineering principles and Autodesk Inventor. Created and
maintained commercial line of P & ID layouts as well as line-wide piping size specifications
and piping layouts.
• Traveled to remote customer facilities in U.S. and Mexico to provide on-site start-
up, maintenance and operational training for industrial evaporation systems.
• Develop patentable methods for managing water treatment through innovation,
calculation and Taguchi-method experimentation.
• Engineer and design accurate hydraulic systems for use with various pump,
compressor and fan technologies.
• Develop and maintain required hydraulic specifications for centrifugal, flexible
impeller, gear and air-diaphragm pump systems (flow, duty head, NPSHr, etc…) based on
custom fluid characteristics (density, viscosity, etc…) as well as engineering and design
modification to use the closest possible performance curves available.
• Engineered specific heat exchanger calculations required to maintain a heat
balance under specific reduction ratios with specific fluid characteristics (thermal
conductivity, specific heat, viscosity and density). These calculations could then be used to
determine the most cost-effective design requirements for shell & tube and plate & frame
heat exchangers as well as verify and validate the recommended designs from the heat
exchanger suppliers.
• Develop numerous Excel-based spreadsheets for other engineering staff to
accurately design waste water evaporation equipment using a static set of design principles
for use with custom waste streams and reduction ratios.
• Create and manage thousands of custom and purchased 3D models reflecting
accurate detail and mechanical properties for simulation and analysis using Autodesk
Inventor and Vault.
• Develop and support deliverable documentation for step-by-step production
fabrication and assembly, as well as supplier fabrication.
• Communicate with suppliers to determine the most cost-effective means of
applying their products into the waste-water treatment systems.
• Use Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP) software to create and control
component-level detail for purchasing, production and accounting.
• Managed entire assembly of custom industrial equipment from design through
manufacturing, acting as manufacturing engineer to answer questions and revise designs
based on the expertise of the production staff to reduce costs and improve products.
Project Engineer - Eastprint Incorporated (1994 – 2007)
• Management of up to 20 concurrent, custom electronic assemblies from the order stage
through to shipment.
• Reduced global corporate cost of business through creation and maintenance of custom
databases for company-wide information management. These databases were designed
around the corporate MRP system and controlled Quality Assurance, ECO management,
Sales Order/Quoting and Documentation Management.
• Responsible for the creation and maintenance of the engineering department’s procedural
documentation. This documentation is the primary basis for all training.
• Provide a standard project schedule with cost analysis as well as provide complete design
support for each custom product.
• Design support provided using both AutoCAD and Pro/Engineer (versions 9 - Wildfire 3).
• Senior CAD manager for AutoCAD, Pro/Engineer Wildfire and Protel 99 SE responsible for
the direction, training and support for the company's CAD system.
