CAREER SUMMARY
Amit offers near 20 years of experience in a variety of areas:
Managing business activities (P&L, pricing, contracts, material availability) for Ashland’s ~ $400 mm/yr
pharmaceutical business. He has successfully managed a loss making SBU within regulated business and
transformed it into a business with improved performance, consistently exhibiting positive GPM . He has
successfully implemented price increase initiatives to off-set high raw material cost and protect GPM. Also
involved with developing emerging markets and new growth opportunities, product and project management,
project and profitability evaluation (using NPV, IRR, ROI as well as portfolio analysis). Successfully launched
several new products in the pharmaceutical excipient space as well as industrial rheology modification space.
PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYMENT
2010-Present ASHLAND INC, WILMINGTON, DE, Global Business Manager and new product leader,
Pharmaceutical and Nutritional Specialties Division
Managing P&L account for Ashland's ~$400mm/yr Pharmaceutical Industries
Business
Protected business unit’s GP via implementing global price increase initiatives to
offset costs
Managed two key SBU's (Klucel and Film Coating) under regulated business
Improved profitability of Ashland's Film coating business by transforming a $ 2.5
mM loss making business to a positive GPM business (~10%) with $3.7 mm
revenue in 1 yr.
Managed product pricing and supply for Ashland's regulated business for
Ethylcellulose, NatrosolTM, BenecelTM, KlucelTM, AquariusTM and modified Guar
products
Successfully led project team for introducing existing cellulose ether products for
new application in the food market.
Launched two new products, BenecelTM DC HPMC and AquasolveTM HPMC-AS
products in the pharmaceutical market
Conducted financial analysis using discounted cash flow model for bringing a key
unit operation function in-house (~$1 mm/yr savings)
Constantly engaged with the senior leadership team for implementing long term
corporate strategy around repositioning existing products towards new market
Worked closely with the commercial team and supply-chain to eliminate technical
road blocks around product procurement
Successfully worked with the commercial team to secure long term business with a
variety of food and pharmaceutical companies (Astra Zeneca, Newly Weds Food,
Invagen, Lupin Ltd (India), Aurobindo Ltd (India), Granules India, Teva, Sanofi,
Novartis etc)
2005-2010 ASHLAND INC, HOPEWELL, VA. Senior Staff Process Engineer
Improved product quality to secure new business (~20 mT) and reduce off-grade
material.
Project evaluation via return on investment (ROI), net present value analysis (NPV)
and internal rate of return (IRR) tools for making go/no-go decisions
Identified possible marketing strategy (new growth area versus maintaining existing
market share) via product differentiation
Varied process during developmental phase to minimize capital cost
Develop strategies for controlling product properties in the plant reactor
Direct process feasibility testing in the pilot plant for new product development
Develop strategies for optimized usage of pilot plant equipment.
Support manufacturing trials with improved process conditions
2003-2005 RHODIA INC, CRANBURY, NJ. Principal Engineer I
Technical Project Manager for the development of multiple monomer based “fast to
market” products.
Scale-up of a low temperature ethoxylation process from 1kg scale to 5 mT
Managed Rhodia’s thermal Process Safety Laboratory
2000-2003 RHODIA INC, CRANBURY, NJ. Senior Engineer II
Performed Macroscopic heat and mass balance on batch and semi-batch reactors.
Investigated jet mixing for rapid introduction of a fast reaction species in an
industrial batch reactor.
Investigated by-product stripping/distillation for product purification.
Performed a detailed thermodynamic and kinetic study of Propoxylation and
Ethyoxylation reactions to gather fundamental information including activity
coefficients and reaction rates, for improved process control
Investigated depolymerization reaction, via H2O2, of a natural polymer using high
resolution DSC, by carrying out the reaction in the calorimeter and using the
reaction exothermicity for gathering rate information for rapid process
development.
Application of Reaction Calorimeter 1( RC1) reactor and insitu IR for studying
phosphate and sulfate ester chemistry.
Performed mixing calculations to determine just enough mixing conditions in a
solid liquid batch reactor.
Investigated pilot scale removal of Excess “P” from poultry wastewater effluent
using a Dissolved air Floatation (DAF) unit.
1994-2000 BATTELLE PACIFIC NORTHWEST NATIONAL LABORATORY, RICHLAND, WA. Research Scientist.
Conduct upstream research for new product development
Prepare proposals for securing funding from industrial and government sources
Market new technologies to the outside world for scale up and implementation
Developed Falling-film Glow Discharge Plasma reactor for Water Treatment.
Modeling of NOx removal from diesel exhaust in a non-thermal plasma reactor
using CHEMKIN III software.
In situ treatment of TCE contaminated soil using Fenton’s reaction.
