SEMINAR

Title Sensitive Skin

Description This paper is an attempt to describe the need for a smart

technology named 'Sensitive Skin'. Sensitive skin is a

large-area, flexible array of sensors with data processing

capabilities, which can be used to cover the entire surface

of a machine or even a part of a human body. Depending on the

skin electronics, it endows its carrier with an ability to

sense its surroundings via the skin's proximity, touch,

pressure, temperature, chemical/biological, or other sensors.

Sensitive skin devices will make possible the use of

unsupervised machines operating in unstructured,

unpredictable surroundings among people, among many

obstacles, outdoors on a crowded street, undersea, or on

faraway planets. Sensitive skin will make machines "cautious"

and thus friendly to their environment. This will allow us to

build machine helpers for the disabled and elderly, bring

sensing to human prosthetics, and widen the scale of

machines' use in service industry. With their ability to

produce and process massive data flow, sensitive skin devices

will make yet another advance in the information revolution.

This paper surveys the state of the art and research issues

that need to be resolved in order to make sensitive skin a

reality.

MINI PROJECT

Title Speedometer cum Odometer with over speed alarm using PIC

microcontroller

Description

The project has been done with an aim to build a digital

speedometer cum odometer for an automobile, The circuit uses a

a PIC 16F877A microcontroller, an LCD display and some

commonly available components. The digital speedometer is much

efficient as it can detect the speed of rotation digitally.

Each rotation of the wheel moves a distance equal to the

circumference of the wheel. Thus we can calculate the speed

and distance. It can be used in traffic control applications

and this project can be modified to create transmission of

speed of the vehicle to nearby traffic police systems to

detect over speeders and lawbreakers. This system can be used

in accident control in metropolitan cities and thus avoid

traffic jams. By adding speaker, the driver can be warned of

high speeding by making different noises for different speeds

or using voice commands.

MAIN PROJECT

Title RLNG Retrofitting of the Existing Burner Management System in

Captive Power Plant Boiler using PLC

Description

This project was conducted in Fertilisers And Chemicals

Travancore Limited (FACT). FACT is a leading producer of

fertilizers like Factumfos and Caprolactum in India. The

project was centered on the boiler plant of petrochemical

division of the FACT Udyogamandal plant. This division of FACT

manufactures Caprolactum, the raw material for Nylon-6, which

is extensively used for the production of tyre-cord, Textile

filament yarn and engineering plastics.

The power required for operation of these plants is developed

by generating steam from the Captive Power Plant (CPP) which

is the power generating unit of FACT. Main objective of CPP is

to provide steady and continuous power.

Aim of this project is to develop LNG Retrofitting of existing

burner management system, which emphasizes on the inter

locking facility, introduction of safety parameters to the

system, various control operations and the entire system

maintenance by using PLC. The PLC used here is ABB 907 AC

1131.

The retrofitting is done mainly because of the hike in oil

price. The CPP consists of a boiler for generating steam and a

furnace which is heated with the help of burners located at

the walls of the furnace. At present the fuels used in

ignition are furnace oil & LPG but after retrofitting the

furnace oil is replaced with Natural gas and still the pilot

flame can made from LPG .The existing oil fired system is kept

intact for use in case of emergency. Some extra safety

precautions and extra valves should be installed for the

retrofitting process.
