Effects of Video Placement and Spatial Context
2007 to Present
Members:Yi Wang, David Bailey, Trevor Kennedy, Sarah Peck, Swethan Anand
I was a co-investigator of a human information processing project involving video surveillance tasks using
computer 2D/3D maps with different video placements and spatial context. I provided feedback/suggestions
for the experimental plan, developed questionnaire for test participants, helped recruit and interview
participants, and analyzed verbal response data.
We focused on real-time video data visualization and evaluated two important design factors video
placement method and spatial context presentation method. In addition, we evaluated the effects of spatial
knowledge of the environment. Each participant performance was measured through path reconstruction
tasks, where the participants followed a target through simulated surveillance videos and marked the target
paths on a computer generated environment model. We found that embedding videos inside the computer
generated model enabled real-time strategies and led to faster performance. With the help of contextualized
videos, participants not familiar with the real environment achieved similar task performance of participants
who worked in that environment.
Proposed Design for Commercial Fishing Vessel Lighting System
2007 to Present
Members:David Bailey
Given system constraints, I wrote a design proposal utilizing human-machine systems engineering techniques
including requirements analysis, function allocation, and task analysis. I also considered other human factors
principles and design methodologies for visual displays and photometry for one of the most dangerous
occupations – commercial fishing.
Conceptual Website Design & Usability Measurements
2008 to Present
Members:David Bailey, Vineeta Chaube, Michael Ringenbach, Bobby Beaton
Conceptual social network and retail website for musicians and music lovers in the Southwestern Virginia
area, particularly Blacksburg, VA. We applied usability engineering principles - formative evaluations,
cognitive walk-throughs, benchmark and critical incident measurements, cost-priority analysis, and user
questionnaires - to develop a prototype design of a social and business website for retail client with these
characteristics:
Page5
• An efficient and data-rich presentation of upcoming music events and technical reviews.
• An easy-to-learn (walk-up and use) and low-error interface for musicians, bands, client staff, dealers, and
the general public.
• A high rate of return to the web pages among users and a sense of high user satisfaction and positive
experience with the website.
• Efficient and error free synchronization of music events and calendars.
My role and responsibilities included:
• Organize and facilitate team meetings - virtual and non-virtual.
• Scan environment and conduct staff interviews to understand client-customer roles and interactions,
business goals, customer classifications, and system requirements.
• Conceptualize usage scenarios, screen designs, sustainability, and usability specifications.
• Benchmark analysis and web page navigation tasks.
• Prioritize and recommend changes to content and UI design elements for overall improvement of website
UX.
• Document design progress and evaluation results.

"I worked with David for nearly two years at Liberty University in a Business Analyst/Project Manager
symbiotic relationship: With David’s help, I would set up projects that David would then execute. In these
interactions, David demonstrated an excellent grasp on technical details and the needs of his customers. As I
worked through follow up project tasks with David, I found the quality of his project documentation to be
both comprehensive and concise. David consistently displayed a hunger for knowledge and a strong work
ethic. I was sorry to hear that David had moved on and would welcome any opportunity to work with him
again."

"I had the pleasure of working with David for approximately 2 years at Liberty University. We both were
Project Managers for various IT Projects in regards to new software implementations, configurations and
upgrades to name just a few. David oversaw many other projects than these and I will let his own resume’
speak for those. I initially mentored David to familiarize him with the way projects were run at Liberty
University and David quickly came up to speed and was running his own projects with little or no other
direction in under 3 months. David has a keen eye for detail and is well organized. He is also proficient in
running his projects via an agile or traditional waterfall process. David has an extremely strong work ethic
and I would be happy to have him on my team at any time."
