WORK EXPERIENCE
HEATH HOUSE NURSING HOME (Elderly Mentally Ill)
33hrs per week
At present I work in a nursing home as staff nurse, with the Elderly Mentally Ill. I work with
people diagnosed with dementia, alzimers, bi-polar, schizophrenia and other various mental
illnesses and complex needs.

I have worked as a staff nurse with South Birmingham PCT, with children, young adults and
adults who have a learning disability and either challenging behaviours, physical or complex
needs.
During the years 1982 – 2001, I have worked as a secretary working up from an audio/copy
typist to a Senior Secretary working on a supervisory level. My duties included audio typing,
copy typing, receptionist/switchboard duties, keeping diary, room bookings for
meetings/conferences and meeting and greeting clientel or dealing with customer
services/complaints, face to face and over the phone. I have also been responsible for
stationery orders, petty cash and receiving monies. I have been responsible for the
supervision of up to 4 jnr staff members as well as the opening and locking up of the work
building.

DUTIES AS STAFF NURSE:
My role and duties as a Registered Nurse have included:-
Administration of Medication:
I am responsible for the administration of all medications whilst on shift, such as oral, topical,
depot’s, IM’s, Rectal Diazepam, enema’s and suppositories and I am also Madazalam trained.
Interacting with the Service Users/Residents:
I oversee and take part in the activities, and community outings put on for the residents. I
also listen to them when they need to talk and advise them if they require advice and
encourage them to participate in everyday routines and challenges.
Patient Care:
I help with and oversee the service user’s personal hygiene, general and regular observations
and health checks. I have also prepared meals and helped with feeding or encouraging them
to eat their meals.
Report Writing:
I am responsible for writing up clinical notes, nursing notes, completing datix, care plans and
monthly evaluations and progress reports.
Assessments:
I complete risks assessments, holistic assessments, community assessments, health
assessments using appropriate nursing tools.
Interaction with Outside Agencies:
I communicate with all relevant outside agencies, as and when required, such as CPN’s,
doctors, social workers, families, carers, consultants and psychologist etc. I have attended
ward rounds, mental health reviews, PCP meetings and general MDT’s.
Supervision of Staff:
As staff nurse, I am responsible for directing the support workers. I usually work with 3 or 4
support workers but at times, depending on the situation, I have supervised more staff on a
shift. I am responsible delegating duties and observing support/service user interactions and
advising where necessary, encouraging and supporting staff in their everyday routines.
Sectioning:
I have sectioned patients under Section 5.4 of the Mental Health Act and have assisted when
patients have been sectioned on Section 5.2 of the Mental Health Act.
Budgeting:
I have been responsible for the Petty Cash float and services user’s monies whilst I am on
duty. I would record any monies coming in and all expenditures made through the Petty Cash
or otherwise.
Staff Supervision:
I am responsible for x3 staff’s supervisions. I have to give supervision every 6 weeks which
includes informing staff of any changes, giving advice when needed, reprimanding if
necessary and listening to and chasing up any concerns the staff may have.
